you have to realize that the chats have little to do with the 'community' (i.e. Mario Painters) except for the member composition. Discussion is a grab-bag of whatever comes up -- video games, music, TV, YouTube videos, etc. Yeah, I expected that to be the case.

uhh... those were just questions? Like, I wasn't even trying to sound whiny, I really... was... just... curious. What, are asking questions these days considered "whining"? It wasn't even really a spam thread... it was more or less an off-topic forum game area :/ no god honestly if you want a place to be the way you want why don't you just make another one yourself

Whoa.... what happened to this place..?
I do like the idea of creating a new or revised version of MPC. I really think it's about time for a new one. Of course, there are complications with finding programmers, motivation, etc. However, I think simply keeping the concept alive might allow it to grow.
I also really like the collaborative stuff. I feel like we can find a way to incorporate it more. As shinyjiggly stated, we're all working for a similar goal, and I think the collaborative projects help us to unify and tighten this community (as well as give us motivation! have you ever noticed how people tend to be more inclined to finish something when working with others than doing a solo project? ...with exceptions of course).
As for innovations: sure we've come a long way, but the world is boundless. As long as people are constructing their projects with a creative and open mind (and enjoying it), innovations will come naturally.
EDIT: I think what we need is a giant MPC revival project, inviting all past and present MPC users and inspiring future generations. Publicity!! (Which is actually another good point). It seems if you're not subscribed to everyone and their mom on YouTube, you're left out of the circle (to contests, collabs, new great releases).

Sadly, some of the MPH community collabs grind to a halt. The current community compositions are in limbo and the community hacks were on hiatus for a long time and now their threads appear to have been deleted (which is sad, and would prevent them from being quickly picked up again if there was the motivation), but motivation and often the lack of it is the big issue with collaborations.
Some kind of MPC revival project and a revised version of MPC would both be great ideas (whatever happened to AMS/OCS?) but they would need strong commitment with some kind of driving force to succeed where similar ideas have failed.

Whatever happened to AMS/OCS? I haven't seen FordPrefect post anything about OCS in years unfortunately; I was really looking forward to it. He has officially dubbed his old site as "Legacy" now (http://flyx.org/projects/ams/), and seems to have daily activity still on his new project site (https://github.com/flyx86). As for AMS, it freaking rocks!?!

1. all the best collabs are planned on skype not mph
2. i like mpc 2.0 how it is. to be frank if it wasn't all for the glitches, there would actually be alittle more new mpcers because i can imagine new people getting really put of by the glitches that can ruin their composing time (overwritten files, not placing notes sometimes, can't place another note even though there's less than 5 notes on the measure, or so it may look like it) if these glitches are fixed then mpc is pretty much a top program in its own series, there's no need to improve it more.
sure, i like the fancy stuff like mpc tools and SFs, and the ams ideas like typing in the tempo and mixing SFs, but in all honesty mpc offers to people from anyone with or without musical experience, and anyone who does or doesn't have much of the techinal IT skills. mpc 2.0 is good enough to get people to be really practical and to arrange their fave songs on a unique program. we've already seen some good results, right?
3. i'm saving mpc by being a hero and making mpcs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well ok making mpcs isn't gonna save the world but i'm planning lots of things so watch out
4. whats OCS
5. i'm kinda bored and part 2 of point 2 might make no sense (I'M TIRED.............................) but i hope you get my point

open cartoon sequencer, a cop-out title for advanced mario sequencer to remove any risk of it being potentially undermined by copyright infringement

This has been my first time seeing this place in months, or so it seems. It is quite... nostalgic to say the least, since it feels as though there has been a spur of activity as of late. (Been completely in the dark here so I'm not sure if that's true or not.)
I hope I touch on something useful here. If not, then I'm sorry for making you read this disjointed stream of consciousness written text.
This community was the first thing I had ever joined on the internet scene, and I believe I joined at the time where MPC had just hit its peak. People were producing songs at quite a steady pace, soundfonts had recently been created, the community was pretty alive, and chatzy was existent. It was really fun, and I had dedicated a lot of the second half of my high school career here. Many hours were spent to the attempted creation of MPCs, chatzy, and also that Pokemon Hack that unfortunately came to a slow halt as a result of many many factors and having bit off more than we could chew. It was fun while it lasted. But unfortunately, as time goes on, and as we get older, we have to attend to sometimes more pressing matters such as school and other things. Skype has become the main method of communication between everyone, and quite frankly, why not? It's very convenient, immediate response, and it's FREE. MPH can still be a great place for certain things but certainly not everything, and Skype likewise, though I never use the darned thing.
Music, and the novelty of this awesomely awkward program, is what brought this community together. And I think that sometimes it's that we've forgotten this and that's why we fight so much. I mean sure, not everyone is going to get a long with each other. That's just the way the world works, plain and simple.
People won't stay here forever, and there are many of us who have already left. Rusty (I think?), Pokesonic, Kace, to name a few. We've just moved on. However, I feel like taking such animosity towards a community that at one point could have been friends isn't something that sits well with me personally.
To me, it's like..... a bad relationship that's ready to fall apart. It was all great and cutesy and fun and other nonsense in the beginning, but as time goes on, it just gets harder and harder to deal with and at one point we know that it has to end. We can do that either very aggressively and with a grand exit, slowly ignore it until it fades away, or leave in somewhat a happy manner, or some of us will just stick with it to the very end. I think we might all grow old of MPC at one point in time, but that doesn't mean that we should grow old of the camaraderie that made MPC fun to begin with.
It will be interesting in regards as to where the future of MPC and this forum itself lies.

There will probably be a time not too far away when all of us here no longer use this forum, but it would be nice to think that there will be plenty of newer, fresher faces to take our place and keep this little community going. It may or may not happen in that way and I expect that if, before we all fade away, we don't make some kind of effort to spur new interest into MPC then this once bouncing little place will grind to a permanent halt. That would be sad.

these "being friends with everyone" points sound very nice and all, but it isn't reassuring because a good portion of those who have held the strongest dislikes of other community members won't even bother trying to communicate with anyone
or try to actually interdict as much contact as possible with other people in some cases
stop getting distracted, all of you, jeez

Looks like Tiger is back in charge. It will be interesting to see how much this place revives, if at all. Probably too far gone, but it's worth a shot.
