I feel like writing an essay is a lot of work for a swift kick to the balls. The oreos are a different story, they have monetary value.

i'm incredibly impressed buckyboy kept up the top work with sotw even after a tiebreaker round with 0 voters
i think it probably ended because there simply weren't very many songs being released anyway
edit: also in regard to making any sort of unified chat in skype (i think it was eataninja who suggested it), i think that's where the forum comes most handy. i would honestly be happy with having one community again as opposed to like 4 major skype chats all with people that get together because they all have mario paint in common. i'd take this over skype as a central nexus, and considering how divided skype got in a matter of months, i don't understand how anyone may disagree

I don't know the context, (eg what's happened in the past), and I realise he didn't approach the issue in the best way, but I can't help feeling sorry for the way GM was being knocked down when he just wants to be an equally treated member of the MPH community. I know this place is never going to be a Utopia, but I think we should try to treat each other well, and be tolerant of people we don't like so much. Not doing that has upset some members and made them feel unwanted, which I think is unfair, and is possibly what's lead some people to leave and put off new members.
Also, with that in mind, I think a community Skype chat would be cool: Put from the perspective of someone like me, someone who isn't in any of the Skype chats, if I wanted to join a chat, which one would I request to join? Would I be wanted in the private ones? If there was a community chat which is easy to access and anyone from the MPH is allowed in, like the old Chatzy, I would feel welcome, and to me this seems to be the best way of not excluding people. I appreciate it's hard to all get along and avoid arguments, but I don't think it's an impossible task.
I like what ShinyJiggly wrote, I also feel the MPH is becoming a little less of a friendly community and a little more hierarchical- There seems to be a bigger friendship gap between the admins and mods and the normal peasants (like me) than before. Maybe we should step back a little and look at the bigger picture of this place as a (small) community in order to consider our attitudes to this place and its members.

And every time I've suggested this, people go NOOOOOOOOO SKYPE and insist that there's nothing wrong with the chat even though there are clearly issues. -_-

Since when I started in 2008, I've always made MPCs for personal enjoyment, and the fact that others also liked them was merely a side effect. The fact that I could enjoy my MPCs by myself without caring too much about how others thought of them was something that allowed me to better myself as I critiqued my own pieces. Cue MPH creation. In summer 2008, LoloGuru's YouTube group was gaining popularity, and yet it lost it just the same in the late summer. Why? EL GATO GRANDE had created a superior alternative to the group, this forum. My purpose of joining? To get to know more people with similar interests, and to collaborate in bettering ourselves. Throughout the end of 2008. many great things came out of the forum, most notably the development of soundfonts, and even more MPCs. There were a few hiccups. Rhythm2Beat (before my time), Blueheat127, DJNightForce9 - these were actually all the same person. They were heavy post-makers, and they also ended up stealing one of Balloon's songs. They were banned. SuperiorLarxene. Actually male. We thought he/she was female for the longest time before Mandy and co. exposed this. Imprenna - Also actually male. I don't remember the details about how they found this out. Though all in all, I think this turned out extremely well. The community compositions, however infrequent, were a massive success. Some people developed MPC techniques that would not have surfaced without others asking around. People made MPCs to better themselves and to challenge others to get better. I got swept up in this as well and had a massively great time improving along with the others, and even though I most definitely wasn't the best at any one thing, (aka. Rusty with power, Ultrathing with chaos, Poptart with chaotic chaos, M7 and Balloon with overall greatness, theEvilGrimace and his legendary-ness, etc) I always tried to see what else I could eke out of the program, or what else I could convince others to do. It seems to have worked out fairly well - the discussion with Grimace about the tempo gaps, dickspeed competitions in mid 2008, soundfonts in 2009, and more original soundfont coolness in 2010. I also feel like the ambiance movement of recent times has done great things to the overall quality of MPCs. And those who are getting introduced to the program are getting such a jump-start through either the forums, our videos, both, or many other things. (some, neither, but that's another story). Quite a few people have moved on since the beginning of MPC's popularity. And that's fine. They have the right to hold a life beyond MPC, and I'm fairly sure that MPC isn't the only thing you all do in life - school is a big factor for everyone. In fact, I'd think that about half of the active MPH is now college-age, and the other half the latter half of high school, with a few exceptions of course. Even though throughout the years I've usually been kind of slow at MPCing things, I've always kept the mentality that I'd improve myself as I went. I usually tried to meet a certain threshold. And if it didn't meet, then I wouldn't post, or I'd try to make it better such that I could do so. That, I think was what a good portion of the MPH was created for. However, there's also the social aspect of MPH. We've done community comps, hacks, music discussions, Song of the Week, composer ratings, Paintasy, and many other things. This kind of thing really only works when you have several people all gathered in one place collaborating with each other. Skype popped up as a solution to chatting, and I think with the amount of chats that are up right now, it's probably fine, though it gets tedious to read. People will talk to those that they want to talk to. I personally talk to whoever and it seems to work out fine. Those who are less inclined to talk to the entire MPH generally stay around in their circles. That is fine. We all have our differences and I think while having private circles may not be the best solution, it is *a* solution that works. There are those who react differently to comments, and those who may harp on things that others say. The most important thing about this, I think, is that you have to remember that this is the internet. You are talking, impersonally, to others that are also reading lots of text that you type. Some of us have each other added on Facebook. This is still indirect communication. Some of us have met in person. But to others, the online interaction is still indirect communication. My point is, we will never 100% be able to understand each others' intentions. We will just have to remember that and continue on with our attempts at communicating. Some of you may take text very seriously. I respect that. Some other won't take it seriously at all, and may frequently joke around. I respect that as well. It's the fact that people will take advantage of those who take things more seriously to elicit some enraged reaction that I'm much less tolerant about. However, I also understand that some people just do this because that's who they are. I feel like I've played one of the more interesting roles in these last four years, one in which I always seem to be stuck in the middle. On one hand, I like talking to everyone without penalty, but at the same time, it pains me that some of you would get so carried away as to start actually hurting others' feelings. I can't do anything about this. I'm just writing more text here. But that is how I feel. Of course, you're all still my friends in your unique ways. I just feel very unsure as to how this might be dealt with, since frankly, there might not be a solution. We may just have to deal with how things are as they are. I know that I've matured since 2008. Hopefully, we all have. I remember those first posts that I made, everywhere in the forums EXCEPT the intros board. I remember competing with Blueheat and Pokesonic about post count, which was fun. That has since gone, and I just post to post now, not to compete with others. That being said, we *are* actually getting a second generation of newcomers, one that's relatively new to the forums and may not have had the time to develop with the rest of the forums yet. Those who started in 2007-2009 are soon to be hitting their 3-5th years of MPCing. That's quite a long time, especially in internet terms. Those just joining today are already at a deficit of 3-5 years from the older people. But that's ok, since people learn quickly, and get good at things quickly as well. Most of the group of 2007-2009 seems to have joined in a general cluster, and those who joined in 2010 were fairly easily integrated into MPH. 2011 saw a few newcomers that still were fairly easily integrated, but that was beginning to stretch. At that point, expectations were built up about how people were supposed to act, and how newbies were supposed to "pay their dues" kind of attitude, which is usually fair. I think it's that we have somewhat of two major groups now - 2007-2009 people who have chatted together since then and 2011- people who are just joining the groups now - things are getting strained at times because they simply didn't evolve with the community because they're just joining. Again, there are exceptions, everywhere, but that's what I've been seeing. Some of us may feel like they're nearing the end of their patience with the program, and decide not to take people who talk about it seriously seriously much anymore. That's to be expected. But to those who have just joined, realize that they are still in the stage where everything is extremely interesting and possibly idealized. Maybe this is why we have more chats than just one. I can't say for certain. There will always be differences. Mostly, it comes down to the fact that people have different personalities and will have varying degrees of seriousness. People will have to keep that in mind when speaking with each other. Those who are newer are unfortunately at the mercy of their own impressions of us at their first glances; they've got no information whatsoever about how we act. Those who've been around a while, will know what we intend to do with our words. But they are in the long run, just words. My attendance on the forums may have been slipping in the recent years. Actually, it's always been slipping. I just have so many other things to work on as well. But this little simple program and the community behind it always was something special to me. Something about the limit-breaking, and working with what you have, and just the different types of people that we have on the forum have made the last four years very very worthwhile to me. I don't promise that I can participate fully in the year to come (insane schedule in fall / spring), but I can promise that I will continue to work on MPC and do my best to do my best. August of this year will be interesting. I know that this post may not mean much to some. I put a lot of time into it because I want those that read it to try to understand what's going on, at least for how I see it. Maybe you won't read all of it. That's fine. I can't do anything about it. But for those of you who've read it and thought about it: just take a moment to think about what's gone into this community, and what we've done in the last four years. We've accomplished a lot. Don't let it go to waste.

if you want to be involved in the community, get involved! make friends! talk to people! it's not hard to make a skype account and say 'hey this is my skype add me to your chats mario paint people', people are happy to do so as it's been said repeatedly throughout this thread, a community skype chat isn't good for anyone and even when it's been tried recently people just leave because they don't like other people and prefer their own little chats or whatever (and i don't blame them either it's pretty understandable) I agree with what you're saying. I think the issue with that for people who haven't been here long or who are less out going is that the MPH isn't as welcoming as it could be, and so, for those people, just getting stuck in isn't as easy as you make it sound. In truth, I can't comment with great accuracy on whether a community skype would work, having not been in previous attempts, and I understand from what you said why it hasn't worked in the past. I do, though, think it's possible that if people were more tolerant of people they didn't like and were friendly to everyone then it could be more successful. The old Chatzy was almost always a nice, friendly place to go. (On a related note: Skypers, my account is julian.woods7, I'd be grateful if any of you were willing to add me to a chat) Rehd, I think your post is great by the way.

awesome post Rehd, read it all I kinda tried that with my chat.... but all anyone wanted to do was spam there... I didn't even care anymore about the insults and usual crap people would try to do to put me down, but the spam is a completely different thing. Dude, there was so much spam, that it like crashed skype for some people (I myself had to wait like 5-10 minutes for everything to load). and to whomever did spam, I still let them stay in the chat, so I dunno. I only made a 2nd chat to get away from the spammers... GM chat 1.0 is still up though, where I said that anything is allowed and anyone could join, because I still wanted to have a chat where everyone was included (because I didn't see any other chats that did this, it wasn't because I "wanted to have the best chat" or whatever) but several people left and nobody cared anymore after that point :/. it's not that I disliked the spammers and felt like excluding them from a "secret group" or whatever... it was so I could actually chat with others, and they could chat with me without the chat being spammed so much that nobody could read what anyone was saying. I'm sorry that I thought a "chat"room was for chatting. I would actually like it if someone could enlighten me on the subject of spam. What makes it good? What makes it worth doing? Is it an enjoyable thing to do/see for you guys? if so, why?

uhh... those were just questions? Like, I wasn't even trying to sound whiny, I really... was... just... curious. What, are asking questions these days considered "whining"?
It wasn't even really a spam thread... it was more or less an off-topic forum game area :/

People on the skype chats will be able to enlighten me on this, to which I *assume* the answer is yes: Are there enough people from the community to keep several chats regularly alive?
GM, spamming and trolling can both be good fun, (though not always for everyone) and are often in good, banterous spirit, but I think you're making yourself an easy target for it and then being more upset by it that you need to be. For instance:
Sounds like you're whining that questions are considered whining. I really don't mean to turn on you and be mean, but you are making yourself easy to target.

Yes, except you have to realize that the chats have little to do with the 'community' (i.e. Mario Painters) except for the member composition. Discussion is a grab-bag of whatever comes up -- video games, music, TV, YouTube videos, etc. [USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST]

It was an off-topic forum game area until the admins at the time removed post count on it (so basically you could post there as many times as you want without it affecting your post counter). At that point all hell broke loose and people basically used it to post whatever irrelevant things they wanted. You joined long after it ceased to be a legitimate forum game board, so I don't know you could label it as one. As an aside, I like how quickly it took for spam to creep back in
