This oughta bring some nostalgia through here. The first time I saw a video game on a TV screen included some older siblings playing Sonic on the Sega Genesis. I had a shot but I sucked at such a young age. =(
The first game to work on on my own was Star Fox 64. My older brother borrowed it from a friend and I'd say I was about 5 or 6 when I played it for fun.
BUT!
I'd rather consider Majora's Mask MY first game. The first game to own, complete, and love first. ^_^
Even today, I hail MM as the greatest Legend of Zelda game in the series.

The first game I ever played was Super Mario World for the original SNES. I was around 4 or 5 at the time. My older cousins (19-20) would play through the game, but, not being as skilled or as confident, I would just play the first couple of levels over and over again and rack up a lot of lives in the process. These lives would come in handy when my cousins would get stuck (which happened alarmingly often). I'd get mad when they'd do the life transfer thing.
Another one of the first games I've played is Legend of the Mystical Ninja. I would team up a second-cousin of mine who is a year older than me. We'd never make it very far though; we didn't know how to beat the fourth boss. Legend of the Mystical Ninja is a relatively uncommon game, and I've made five Mario Paint compositions with its songs.
But the first game I've ever owned? Link's Awakening for the Game Boy. Now you all know why I love that game and did all those dungeons on Mario Paint.

The first game I ever played was on the SNES (unknown at the time), but it could either be:
1. The Lion King 2. Super Mario World 3. Mighty Morphing Power Rangers 4. Aladdin
The first game I owned and played would have to be the original Backyard Baseball for the PC.

Megaman X. I got it for my 5th birthday.
We were pretty poor back then, so my mum had to get an old game.(MMX was released in '93, my 5th birthday was in '96. Yeah, I guess back then three years was considered old).

Pokemon Stadium. All the games I had for the N64 until a few years ago were pokemon. And it's my favorite system. and most of the pokemon games sucked for the N64/didn't interest me.

Hmmmm... I think it was LoZ: Link to the Past... I always remember coming down that fated day and finding my dad playing LttP on the SNES... I wanted a go and set about making a mess of things in the Castle courtyard... Good times, good times... I quickly followed it up with Pokemon Yellow and Link's Awakening DX (the latter I got stuck on, I was 4 at the time... -.-)

The first one I played was Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis. The first one I owned, I think it was Super Mario Land. Can't beat that Chai Kingdom theme!

Oh yeah, I remember now. It was Hal's Hole in One Golf on the SNES. I remember going over to my Grandparents' house when I was 3 and playing it. It was the most simple but addicting game ever. It still holds my title as the best golf game of all time. ;D I still play it today!
But I think the first game I actually owned and played was Banjo Kazooie when I was 5. Never could get past Treasure Cove though.

Boy do I feel old ¬_¬
First game was Ms. Pac-Man for the Atari 2600, that was back in 1987, most of y'all haven't been born yet, HAH! ;D
When I was a kid, the game market crashed. That was the 80s, man, hard times for a kid to grow up without any entertainment to dull the mind and the senses. Then when Nintendo came to America, the lights parted the dusty old grey clouds, and the future never looked brighter for a boy of nine years of age when he opened his christmas gift that faithful year of 1988.
We never had those fancy Guitar Heroes, or Haloes, or Gods of War, we had Mario, Luigi, Samus, and Megaman. Lousy kids and their l33tsp33k ;D.

Donkey Kong Country was the first I remember playing, around 3 years old, though I have stories that tell me I'd watch my Uncle play it when I was even younger.

Pokemon Yellow. But I'm pretty young, so the first console game I played was Super Mario World at a day-care center in Gold's Gym. I kept forgetting to duck when the bullet bill came at Yoshi's Island 1-2. First console game I got was Scooby Doo Night of 100 Frights for GCube. ^_^

First game I ever played was Pong on my grandparents' brand spankin' new Intellivision (yep I'm that old). I didn't actually own my own system or games until the NES came out. My first NES game? Why, Legend of Zelda, of course. ;D

I remember putting in some hours on that as a child. Surely that was my first game. =/

Wario Blast for the GameBoy. It's a Bomberman game with a heavy emphasis on the single player mode. Some of those bosses were pretty brutal, especially when only one hit killed you. I had four-digit passwords sitting around EVERYWHERE for that game. Oh, those were the days... I also played a ton of Yoshi's Island as a kid. The ghosts that clung to the floors and ceiling in Big Boo's Castle (2-4) scared me. I had to get my mom to beat that part.
