I had this idea earlier today to start another new SoundFont, loosely based on my Mario Paint Real and delaythepickup's Woodwind Symphony. All of the instruments will be high-quality symphonic instruments, like what you hear in an orchestra.
Now, there are 19 instruments, so I just need to know what to use. I can put in lot of percussion instruments (numerous on a single note), as well.
In no real order, here is most of what I have to work with. Anything in red is not likely to be in, because of a similar instrument. Anything in blue is guaranteed to be in. I need to shorten this list down to 17 instruments, to leave room for percussion. 1. Violin 2. Viola 3. Cello 4. Double Bass 5. Strings Section 6. Trumpet 7. Trombone 8. Tuba 9. French Horn 10. Brass Section 11. Piccolo 12. Flute 13. Clarinet 14. Oboe 15. Bassoon 16. English Horn 17. Vibraphone 18. Glockenspiel 19. Marimba 20. Xylophone 21. Piano 22. Bright Piano 23. Celesta 24. Pipe Organ 25. Harp 26. Tubular Bells 27. Orchestra Hit 28. Pizzicato Strings 29. Choir
Percussion (technically, the mallets and piano go here): 1. Bass Drum 2. Timpani (Kettle Drum) 3. Snare 4. Cymbal 5. Castenets 6. Wood Block 7. Triangle 8. Tambourine 9. Gong 10. Chime Tree 11. Vibraslap 12. Güiro
Please post your ideas for what instruments you believe are unnecessary or anything I should add, such as saxophones, guitars, or synthetic sounds. I hope to get this out before Thanksgiving.

I have no real preferences except that you add Trombone and Violin.

I have no real preferences except that you add Trombone and Violin. He already has Trombone and Violin on the list. I'm aware, but I believe he is saying that the purpose of this thread is to choose instruments, out of the ones he has potsed, for his new soundset.

Some suggestions: -Combine all precussion into 1, and put timpani on mushrooms -Ax all "sections". They aren't necessary with the individual instruments -Keep the trombone
I hope you finish this. It looks good.

Choir, Harp, String Orchestra, Violin, Horn, Tuba, Trombone, Piano and a lower octave String Orchestra. That's pretty much all you need for a symphony. Right?

It looks good. - Combining percussion will be done. That was my plan for timpani. - The sections work nice because of the limits of MPC. I absolutely can't toss the string section. - See below. No need for: -Double Bass -Viola -Piccolo -Glockenspiel -Marimba -Xylophone -Bright Piano -Trombone -Celesta -Pizzicato -English Horn -Vibraphone The only addition that's most useful in my opinion is a Choir. A male or a bass choir is the best type in my opinion. Remember to set the loop points, and if that isn't possible, make them sustain longer by other means. I almost guarantee these won't be in: viola, double bass, piccolo, marimba, bright piano, trombone, or English horn. Pizz will be in, for sure. I might combine the glockenspiel and vibraphone into one: the star. Current assignment: obtain the sounds of all necessary instruments. I will try to make some about three to five seconds, especially the cello and

C'mon, AGBNT. All good BANDS NEED TROMBONE. Alright, MAYBE. But I really need a decision on the remaining instruments. Notice I changed some of them to blue in the first post. Those are sticking for sure.

I think you should definitely cross out French horn. And perhaps add in... a Tenor sax?

I would have to hear a demonstration of each of these sounds before making judgment. The idea sounds good though; I'll definitely try out the finished product.

It's always the worst instrument in a band, I don't know if it's hard to play or what. It also sounds equivalant to shoving some apples down a tenor sax.

If RehdBlob ever finishes his "Mario Paint Composer Professional", use the full list of instruments as the soundfont for his MPC Pro. Wait, so you mean that image he posted in Ford Prefect's thread was an image of something he was working on?

Alright, I've got most of it complete. These instruments are in: Mario - Piano Mushroom - Timpani Yoshi - Flute Star - Glockenspiel (probably will add vibes to lower half) Flower - Trumpet Game Boy - Pizzicato Strings Dog - Cello Cat - Violin Pig - (not in yet)Swan - Orchestra Hit Face - (not in yet)Plane - French Horn ;D Boat - All percussion mentioned above except gong Car - Choir Heart - Acoustic Bass Piranha - Tuba Coin - (not in yet)Shy Guy - String Section Boo - Harp That's it. Only THREE instruments left! Due to the way the coin is handled, I will likely move the pizzicato strings to it and put something else there.

No, but seriosuly, ADD A TROMBONE! It won't be a real symphony otherwise.

OBOE
I remember playing it in the band about 5 years ago. I don't remember the first thing about it now, but it sounded cool.

Oh, oh! The final three should be oboe, bassoon and trombone.
