<pub>Hey you! Yes, YOU! Do you like video games? More precisely, do you like to watch people play through your favorite video games in record time using all sorts of knowledge and exploits? If you answered yes, then you may enjoy the 2014 edition of Summer Games Done Quick! Click here for more information on this event.</pub>
From my experience and what you can read on the page linked above, Games Done Quick (including its Awesome and Summer variants) is a charity video game marathon that features high-level play by members of the speedrunning community. It's a free streamed event: both the game and on-location footage are live and there's also a chatroom next to the videos. For each event, Games Done Quick associates itself with a charitable institution such as the Prevent Cancer Foundation and Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières). A link on the main page is available for people to donate whatever amount they can/want to the selected institution and without any obligation to do so.
Donating does help a cause that may be close to you, but it also allow you to send a comment that will likely be shared live by the team on location. Plus, you can choose your donation to change certain elements during the marathon such as the games being played and the conditions of a specific speedrun. These are called incentives or bids. Incencitives doesn't change the fact that 100% of your donation goes straight to the charitable organization. Finally, depending on when you're donating, you're automatically eligible to certain prizes like perlers, prints and games. The only requirement is that your donation must be equal or greater than a specific amount/minimum bid.
SGDQ 2014 will last from June 22nd to June 28th and will benefit the Doctors Without Borders foundation.
The event's main page as well as one of the two places where you'll able to watch the stream: gamesdonequick.com/.
Link to the schedule listing the games being played, runners, run time estimates and other details. It's constantly updated as the marathon progresses: gamesdonequick.com/schedule.
Event tracker where you can check the available incentives and prizes with information on each of them along with other info: gamesdonequick.com/tracker/10.
If you want a preliminary taste of the event, you can check videos from previous editions of Awesome Games Done Quick and Summer Games Done Quick here: www.youtube.com/user/SpeedDemosArchiveSDA/videos.
Thank you for your attention. I'm not affiliated with Games Done Quick in any way and I created this thread just in case some of you would be interested. If I've made a mistake, please let me know.
