Just beat it earlier today, and it is quite simply the most creative and captivating RPG that I have ever played. I loved the way the battles were done; allowing more damage to be dealt by pressing the attack button on the beat was a really creative way to keep the battle system unique and interactive.
But the battles would utterly fail if it weren't for all the music. There are over 230 tracks in Mother 3, some of which are event-specific, but a great deal of which is battle music. There must be close to three dozen battle tracks in the game, all with their own rhythm to beat out. Many of the most effective songs actually start out with simple melodies.
The best part, however, is simply the creative storyline. For prevention of spoiling it, I won't discuss it in great detail but provide a general introduction. If you still don't wish to look, please stop reading now and proceed to the next, entirely spoiler-free paragraph. Now then, for those of you who don't already know, Mother 3 is centered around a shy, fearful boy named Lucas, recognizable from Smash Bros. Brawl. Lucas has an older twin brother named Claus; Claus is more daring. Lucas's place of residence is Tazmily Village, a carefree town in which everyone is kind and sympathetic toward everyone else. There isn't even a need for money; useful, free goods may even be obtained at the bazaar because everyone gets along. At the opening of the story, there is a fire set by a mysterious group of people in a pink spacecraft. From there, life in the tranquil village of Tazmily begins to change.
If you wish to download Mother 3, you first have to find a Japanese ROM on a playable GBA Emulator (VisualBoy Advance works wonderfully). It's illegal to ask where to get ROMs, but obtaining one is little more than a Google Search away. To get a translation patch to play in English, go to the link in parentheses (http://mother3.fobby.net/) and follow the directions there. If you need help, don't hesitate to let me know; helping you out would by my pleasure. I hoped I was able to pique your interest in this game. It's seriously incredible; I can't endorse it enough.
Now then, who else has played Mother 3? If you did, what did you think?
