you get stuck. I'm always trying to think up OCs but I can never seem to stick with one long enough to stand upon. (note my dead youtube channel ) I may lose interest, lose focus, or just look at other people's vids online and think my work is obsolete. Any tips from pros to a rookie like me to get out of this rut?
Thanks for reading ~Jaggedsky17 *EDIT* I'm fine now that I got another song out, thanks for the support

I had a year and a half long rut once. Then I went back to it, started making some simple stuff, and it was fun again. Honestly, the best advice I can give to you is to wait it out.

there are composers that dont post anything for months... its very common. And i know its hard to finish something on MPC, mostly for OCs. The tip i can give you is: you dont need to finish your songs. As long as you use MPC with frequency and do it for fun, at some time you will be finishing lots of songs

Don't let yourself over think your skills and abilities. Just start pumpin' out some compositions if that's what you dig. Don't expect yourself to make timeless masterpieces; know that the more you do something the better you will get at it and the easier it will be. If you enjoy something, just do it and enjoy the fact that you're doing it. Don't let the quality of another's music destroy your perception of your own music (if everyone did this, we wouldn't really have good composers anywhere!)
But yeah, my suggestion is start with something short and simple and allow yourself to build your skill from that.

I have a very large list of unfinished comps, but I've never let it stop me... Just keep on truckin'
Funny/bad analogy: Think of it as a torrent: As you do more, there's a higher chance of all the pieces fitting together to make complete files.

I have a story:
My teacher is from Columbia and is kind of notoriously labeled as a "difficult" teacher. He's a very strict and very honest teacher; he's the type of person who will let you know in front of the class if you're doing poorly. Don't get me wrong, though, he's a really nice guy and a good instructor, but because of his non-American method of teaching, many students find his classes to be overwhelming and difficult (especially sight-singing because they use a totally different system than America).
One of the things he would constantly say is "erase from your mind that this is difficult." I never really conceptualized the meaning of this until a friend of mine was talking about a psychological article he read. Basically, he summarized the reading as follows:
If one puts forth an idea that something is difficult, suffering will be the default sign of progress. If it is presented as a fascinating long term interest, the sign will be of appealing natural development.
Basically, to me this was an epiphany hitting me like a metaphorical brick. I never realized how such a change in perspective can drastically shape the result. So anyway, if you ever find yourself stuck on something, rather than concerning yourself with the difficulty of a task, search for the aspects that interest you, and your interest will be your natural inspiration.

You know that makes so much sense... especially now. thanks, I now realize that that was my problem all along. Honestly, im only venting stressed feelings on you guys to make myself feel better and have self pity. But that's a low move. I'm sorry for the trouble, All i needed was a good break.

Everyone hates it when...
You have a cool new mario paint composition that is better then all of your compositions but doesnt get that much attention then one of yours that was just very simple.
AKA Me and my 5th OC who is better but doesn't get much more attention then All world map themes from smb3.

Fair warning, original compositions are highly unpopular because people don't look for them. They're more likely to look for a re-creation of a popular song. (see TessituraToni who has 339 subs and 400k+ views for 2 uploads)

Yeah... I know Tessi, but that's the sis of Banjario, she doesn't count. She does too. Just cuz she's the sis of Banjario doesn't mean anything. Do you think that everybody subbed and/or viewed her were only there cuz she's related to Banjario? Highly doubtful...

If you're having composer's block, my suggestion is to just have fun. That's what will really motivate you to keep going. Just write what you enjoy writing, at a pace that's comfortable for you.
