I was hoping somebody would bring this up because I've been thinking about it a lot lately @_@ I have a bunch of guitarists that I thank are some of the best so I'll just post a couple at a time. How about Eddie Van Halen and Slash?

I lol'd. Anyway, my vote goes to this guy... Of course there's also Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Kirk Hammet (Metallica), George Harrison (The Beatles), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Carlos Santana...

There isn't a "best" guitarist...it depends how you look at it. Fastest? Most technical? The one whose music you like the most? The most original? The most popular? The most influencial?
+Kirk Hammet's overrated IMO. Vai and Lifeson are both good choices though.
How about Marty Friedman?
Of course Jason Becker was amazing too before he was crippled by Lou Gehrig's.
And he was 17 when he made this album. Come on.

There are probably better guitarists out there, but I'll put my vote in for Todd Rundgren. (FF>> to approximately 3:00 for some hot solo action, but there is some excellent guitar work all throughout the song)
I have to warn you, though, I'm a bit biased, even if he's talented at several instruments.
Edit: All right, just for fun, I'll put in a geek vote for this fellow gamer as well-

I'm amazed nobody has said Jimi Hendrix yet. I'm a big Hendrix fan, personally. Other guitarists I think are great are George Harrison, Eric Clapton and David Gilmour

Chris Broderick.
Plus his work in "Endgame" (Megadeth) is amazing. Can't wait to see what he does in Megadeth's upcoming album.

I don´t dig those 1980´s long solos anymore. can´t think of a favorite but IMO Matt Bellamy is a perfect example of a great guitarist, his solos are there for a reason, not just to show off his guitar skills

Since my last post, I've really got into the blues stuff of Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Elmore James, BB King and a few others. I also really like Robby Krieger's stuff. What I like most about all of those is that their solos aren't about playing as fast as possible, but about playing as well as possible. And that's what I like in guitar music- while playing up and down a scale very quickly as a solo can be impressive, I don't really think it's music. Whereas I think improvising great melodies, with fewer frills and show off pieces, is far more enjoyable to listen to, and I think it shows far more talent.
