Have you ever played a fan-made hack? It could be either one where only a few things are adjusted or a complete hack in which someone completely revamped the game. If so, what did you play, and care to talk about it?
I've played Awful Fantasy (a hack of FF3 - 6j) in which all the characters' pictures, names, items, dialog, and so forth were changed ... made unbelievably bizarre or funny.
Other than that I've played a couple pokemon hacks. The trouble with these is that the people that know enough or use the right tools or are dedicated enough to hack a pokemon game generally have lame or unoriginal ideas. The other problem is that most of them are incomplete as of yet. However, Shiny Gold (a hack of Fire Red to make it look like an upgraded G/S/C generation) was a notable, enjoyable exception.

I got Chrono Trigger as an original ROM, beat it, and then gave some of the mods a shot. They... were good efforts, but I got kinda stuck.
My favorite hacks are the ones that horribly mangle the story/plot and make it into a humorous adventure like you've never seen.
Also, I've played a Halo Custom Edition mod that puts lots of H2 weapons into the Halo 1 campaign. Great stuff.

I like SMW hacks, a lot of them are insanely hard.
I also like Halo Custom edition.

SMW hacks are the best around IMO. The Pokemon ones are supposed to be good too. The problem with those two is that there are too many demos (which I refuse to play). But the full games are amazing.

Halo custom edition is really quite fun. My Halo-addicted friend switched SMG bullets with... I can't remember, but it was crazy when we came across a corridor of grunts... LOLOLOLOLOLOL

I also think that the SMW Hacks are the best ones around. But I often hack games myself (If they aren't 3D) .

SMW Hacks like Super Demo World are extremely well-done. I've seen other NES and SNES hacks, but not that many others.

The only Super Mario World hack I've seen so far is Kaizo (A$$hole) Mario, which features creative level designs but is inhumanely difficult. The person that had the videos was a good player though.

Back when Acmlm's Board was covered with Super Mario World hacking topics (and shortly after, Pokémon hacking), I browsed it day in and day out looking for good hacks. I still have lots of ROM hacks piled up on my computer along with many save games. Then SMW Central came along and basically made it easy to find them. I even once made my own hack of SMW, but it was mostly terrible levels and me having fun, not caring about how well it looked. Favorite hacks: Pokémon ShinyGold by ZEL(Pokémon FireRed) Pokémon Brown by <unknown> (Pokémon Red) Super Mario World Plus series by GoldenYoshi (SMW) Super Demo World: The Legend Continues by FuSoYa (SMW) ...easily my #1 favorite Super Difficult Mario Bros. by <unknown> (SMB) Mario Adventure by DahrkDaiz (SMB3) Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back by Lost-Soul (SMAS version of SMB3) There were a few more, but I don't remember them right now. I also like a bunch of user-generated maps in Halo Custom Edition. Edit: Acmlm's Board still exists!

I've never played any hacked games, but i watch about 25 minutes of SMW hack Let's Plays everyday. I may pick up SMW hacking as a side-project to Mario Paint someday.
