Have a general question about these forums? Look no further! This is all of the basic stuff you will need to know about this place, before you plunge in and become a regular member.
1. The Board
a) So what is this place anyway?
This is the official forum for all Mario Paint Composers. Basically, we discuss the program, post our compositions, judge other compositions, etc. We also have a general section for video game/spam/other discussion.
b) Do I need to be a composer to join?
Nope. It helps though, because it limits what you can really talk about here. It also tends to get you a reputation if you're on the spammy side *cough*Heat*cough*
c) Oh no! I'm not very good!
Don't you worry. We're here to help you if your first few compositions suck wind. Ask what you like, and we'll be sure to answer them to the best of our abilities.
2. Mario Paint Composer
a) What is Mario Paint Composer?
It's a freeware music making program based on the original Mario paint for the SNES. This program adds dynamics, 4 new instruments, infinite tempos, 5 notes per line, and an arrangement feature.
b) Where do I get Mario Paint Composer?
Google it. It's on Unfun Games's website, under Mario Paint Composer.
c) I thought Mario Paint was an art program!
You seem to have forgotten about the mustic studio in the game. It's more limited than this, with 3 notes per line, 4 less instruments, no dynamics, a limited tempo, and a ore limited range. There is a freeware version of this program called Mario Sequencer.
d) What's Advanced Cartoon Sequencer/Open Cartoon Sequencer?
This is Ford Prefect's pet project, an improvement to MPC, if you will. Basically, it makes things such as tempo changes, soundfont edits, and repeats easier to manage. It also adds one extra note, and you can now have 6 notes per line.
e) What are soundfonts?
Soundfonts are different sets of sounds used in leiu of the original MPC sounds. There are many soundfonts, but the most used ones are on Satoshilyish, Cat333pokemon, Balloon303, AWPWR, and Gallahaut's YouTube pages. I also recommend downloading Cat333Pokemon's soundfont manager (located in the downloads section of the forums) to make soundfont swapping easier.
f) What's dickspeed?
Dickspeed (as coined by KarmaJolt) can be defined as any speed used to break the 5 note limit on MPC. Basically, it goes fast enough that the human ear doesn't perceive the gap between the line and the line next to it, making it sound like one larger sound. Watch some high tempo videos on Youtube to see what I mean. It's also largely used for dynamics
g) What are dynamics?
Dynamics are the green bars at the bottom of the program. Move them up and down to make things louder and softer. They make many sounds sound a hell of a lot better.
h) What's the Low A Glitch?
Basically, if you try to place a note below the Low B on the staff, a glitch note pops up that will cut off the previous note on the same instrument. Basically, it shortens the note. You can also place notes on the line with the glitch note, BUT the glitch note counts as one of the 5 notes on the line. Like dynamics, this proves to be very useful in complex songs.
3) These Forums
a) Exactly what gets talked about in the general MPC section?
Basically, you speak your mind about the program, why you use it, what your style is, what your favorite compositions are, etc.
b) I just made a new MPC! Where do I post it?
Post it in the Mario Paint Releases section. Make a topic for yourself, and people are guaranteed to see it. You'll probably get yourself a sub or two that way, especially if you're new.
c) How does the Recording Corner work?
Make a topic asking for a recording for a specific song. I wouldn't suggest asking for a permanent recorder, because that could get troublesome. Getting a recorder for each individual song is a bit more reliable. Good recorders include Phazon, ElectricPopTart18, and GuruXander6060. Also keep in mind that Chatzy is a goo place to ask for a recorder.
d) I just saw this awesome new MPC video! Where do I post it?
Post it in the Up-And-Coming artists section. In your post, say a little something about the composer, and post a video or two of his/her work.
e) Where do I introduce myself if I'm new?
Post a little blurb about yourself in the Introductions Forum. Keep in mind that things tend to get a little silly there, so don't get caught off guard. Be sure to make a good first impression with your first post; we are a small family here, after all.
f) Any guidelines for the Hall of Sporks?
Not really. Just spam the hell out of it. Don't post anything racist, pornographic, or flaming though, just for ethical reasons.
4) Chatzy
a) What is Chatzy?
Chatzy is the official MPC chatroom. The URL for it can be found on this site. Most non-forum related discussions go on there, so I would highly suggest checking it out.
b) How do I get the password?
Most regular members have the password. I would suggest PMing one of the admins.
c) Any rules for the chatroom?
Try not to start a flame war, don't spam too much, keep it somewhat clean, and most of all, just be yourself.
d) Any tags I should be aware of?
/leave leaves the chat. / me posts something equating to a status. /choose chooses between a few things. /rolldie rolls a die. /flipcoin flips a coin.
e) What's this I hear about HTML?
Check the general forums for a full HTML guide. I personally don't use it, so i don't know how to explain it.
f) Does Chatzy behavior reflect on these forums in any way?
It tends to if you do something severe. Just stay out of trouble and you should be fine.
g) What are peak hours?
Typically from about 5pm-10pm EST.
5) Contests
a) What's Song of the Week?
Run by yours truly, this is a pollbased contest where people vote on the best song from that week. There is a preliminary round where I narrow the entries down to 10, as well as a tiebreaker round for ties. Song of the Month is held every month, featuring the top 3 from each week. Song of the Year is at the end of the year and features the top winner from each Song of the Month.
b) What's Rate the Composer?
Run by WaluiJay, one composer per week is rated by the members of this forum. Each composer is given a grade out of 100, and each member most also nominate people, using their 5 nomination points.
c) What's Weekly Composer Challenge?
Run by Winterbourne2k, one category (aka MegaMan compsoers) is chosen each week. Composers are nominated to be in the poll, and then they are voted on by the members of the forum.
6) Notable Members/Events
a) Who created this forum?
This forum was created by AngryTigerP. He was admin here up until his retirement a few months ago. He still remains one of the hearshest people here, although he rarely posts anymore. He's a cool guy though.
b) Who was Rhythm2Beat/Blueheat127/DJ Banned 9?
Oh boy. Basically, it all started at this forum's creation, where a member called Rhythm2beat came here. She claimed to be a Kirby fanbody, never made any effort to make a MPC, and basically spammed. She was banned. Two moths later, a Brit by the name of Blueheat127 joined. Again, he basically only spammed, never made an effort to post an MPC, claiming that he only made them behind the scenes and that he was self conscious. He eventually resorted to stealing an unreleased song from Balloon303, a damn good rendition of Forest Maze. Drama ensued, and heat was banned. He later came back, only to be banned again. He apologized to Kacelano on MSN admitting to incident, but recently he returned as DJ Banned 9. He was banned after the same Blueheat poop began occuring again. He has not come back since, but who knows...
c) What's admin abuse?
It was when Tiger would get bored and mess with the word filters on Proboards. Carnage soon ensued. It has recently ended, and will most likely not return due to unpopularity.
d) What was Mario Paintasy?
A forum RPG played on Chatzy by several members. It has ended due to lack of time on the leaders' part. Synopsises can be found on the Paintasy sub-forum, if you're interested.
e) Who was StolenMPCVideos?
A man by the name of Trumpetmaster who stole a load of videos from a load of people. We got annoyed and caught who he was. The real person is actually a reputable composer. You might want to check a couple of his videos out.
f) Who is RedRanger2001?
He makes Mega Man compositions and uses AWPWRs sounfont make them as accurate as possible! He's a great composer! You should check him out!
