Just adding this here in case some people actually decide to edit the text files. I'll be putting some markers in here as a "key" to what the symbols mean. Also, it will make it easier if anyone wants to delete things, as the files are quite different from MPC and MPC2 text files.
<chord volume="[insert number here]"></chord> The [insert number here] can be anything from 1-16. All instrument notes, modifiers, etc. must be within these two brackets in a line of the song. If an "x" is placed in front of the instrument's name, the instrument becomes a mute note.
<instrument></instrument> replace "instrument" with an actual instrument. Also, letters in between the tags indicate the notes being played.
<speedmark tempo="[tempo]" /> type in a tempo, and that will be in a speedmark in the song
<bookmark /> this is a bookmark in the song

since AMS doesn't support MIDI export i've decided to edit the text file to separate different instruments out so i can more easily put them into a music notation editor such as Finale. Is there a script out there that sorts through the text file and erases all but the desired instrument(s) behind? this would be a million times easier than manually deleting unwanted instruments.
