Good points, Kace...but the fact that Ms. doesn't specify marital status leaves your analogy in the dust, I'm afraid. I think this debate is turning extremely silly. Who cares if it's Mario Paints or Mario Paint Compositions? Who cares if its Resident Evil or Biohazard? Who cares if its Mother 2 or Earthbound? It makes NO difference at all, they all have the same definition. I've not seen a single person get confused with that name before, so what's the problem with it? lol, here's something funny Kace said: "Tiger changed the name of the forum because he doesn't want people walking in and saying, 'hey, why is there only music on this forum. The name argument fails on the grounds that you're comparing proper nouns to verbs. A Mario Paint COMPOSER COMPOSES Mario Paint COMPOSITIONS, in ALL MPC-related programs. A Mario PAINTER would have to PAINT Mario PAINTINGS. You don't PAINT a COMPOSITION (don't give me the metaphorical bullpoo, you don't). Localization does not validate your point, because it does not relate to the fact that painting isn't a music-making activity. At all.
This isn't about a name, everyone fails to realize; this is about saying you're a writer when you write a book, not a painter; saying you're a sculptor when you make a model, not a musician. To sum it up, so that my point is clear (even though I've already said this a dozen times:
PAINTERS PAINT PAINTINGS
COMPOSERS COMPOSE COMPOSITIONS
Also, yes, my argument extends to SNESMP as well; you are still a Composer, just a SNESMPC instead of a MPC. Have you ever noticed? I don't say "SNESMPs", or even "SNESMPCs"; I say "Compositions done in SNESMP".

I actually prefer to use the term "transcribing" as the pieces I transcribe are meant to be as close to the original as possible. I don't think it's really an arrangement unless you are intentionally trying to deviate from the original sound track and incorporating your own musical ideas (such as tombob). And even he was pretty close to the originals.
As for "composer," I think we're using the term loosely because we're not really "composing" unless we're creating an original piece of music.

Okay seriously. Please rename the board "Mario Paint Hangout" now. This is getting a bit annoying. (/extreme exaggeration) You don't have to call them "Mario Paints" or call us "Mario Painters", just let us us call them that.

Personally, I welcome the change in name, bar the allcaps-italic-underline-bolding of it of course  'Musicians' adds ubiquity to our name that encompass all of the things we do. Regardless of how or what we do, it all boils down to or stems from music. I feel that the name now is the correct name for us. EDIT: ...What happened to my post? I consider myself a Mario Painter  I use the original for all it has to offer: art, animation and music! I refer myself as a "Mario Paint Arranger", considering none of my videos are original compositions. |
