There have probably been similar lists before, but when someone favors a specific type of video game, such as platforming, their top 5 lists and the like tend to reflect that. For example, I kind of gathered that you would like Super Mario World if you liked Super Mario Bros. 3, so it doesn't tell me much about you if your top 5 list is:
1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Sonic the Hedgehog
3. New Super Mario Bros.
4. Super Mario World
5. Friday the 13th (Okay maybe this one tells me something...)
So what I'm proposing is this: Tell us your favorite game of every different genre (or at least every genre you have played). You may list a runner-up as well, but I really would prefer if it was not from the same franchise (that means no OoT + TP).
A sample list of my personal favorites (feel free to copy+paste and add or subtract genres, but don't get too specific)
Fighting: Super Smash Bros Brawl, Soul Calibur 2
Beat-em-up (or Hack and Slash): MadWorld, Zelda II
Platform: Super Mario Galaxy, Kirby: Canvas Curse
FPS - Single Player: Half-Life 2, Bioshock
FPS - Multi Player: Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead
Other Shooter (3rd person, shoot-em-up): Resident Evil 4 - Wii Edition
Sandbox: Garry's Mod
Music: Audiosurf, Mario DDR Mix (you can laugh)
Action-Adventure: Zelda TP, Assassin's Creed
RPG: Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun: The Lost Age
MMORPG: RuneScape (It was my life for 1+1/2 years)
Strategy: Pokemon DPP (Assuming they are all pretty much the same), Fire Emblem (Referring to first US release on GBA)
Racing: Mario Kart DS
Puzzle: Portal, Tetris
Wow... that was harder than I though it would be... I had to really recall some stuff there.
Other possible categories that don't really interest me that you could include (not limited to, of course):
Sports
Adventure
Party
