Post any and all questions you have if you have problems, in need of advice, or you're giving advice, I'd like to keep this to one or two threads if possible. Don't ask me anything though, I only know how to browse the internet, use the lovely left and right mouse buttons (they're very fun!) and listen to music on winamp among other things. My computer knowledge is, well...crap . I know there are knowledgable people around here, don't be afraid to ask a question.

I have about as much knowledge of computers as Winter, but I'll be glad to help in any way I can.

Ahaha, I love the name of this new subforum. XD
Yeah, I don't have much experience with computers either, so I'll definitely post here when something "breaks".

Here's your first question. This thing: Has been open for the last nine hours and no matter how many times I left or right click it, nothing opens up. What is it and why won't it open?

On the original topic, I've been a computer user for about 13 years. My first operating system was a combination of MS-DOS and Windows 3.1. I've used just about every version of Windows, including 3.1, NT, 95, 98 (and SE), 2000, ME (*crash*), XP, Vista, and 7. I've also used MS-DOS (3, 5, 6, and 7) as well as Mac OS (4, 7, 8, 9, X 10.2, X 10.3, and X 10.4). I know very little about Linux, as the only version I have used significantly (at least a couple hours) is Ubuntu. I also played around with OS/2 a little bit.

I tried accessing the live MPH chat in the hangout, and it didn't work. Is there something I need to get to make it work?

I have it, but it still doesn't work. :/ I also tried that thing I saw somewhere else on the forum, and allow javascript, and it still didn't work. I wonder if I have to update Java...

Instead of starting a new thread, I figure I would take advantage of this one. If that's not what I should've done, I apologize. I'm looking to buy a new laptop because my current one has an intermittent problem when I turn it on. I've been told that the motherboard is likely damaged due to the AMD processor overheating (I have a Acer Aspire 7551-2755). Anyway... I have (too) many choices in front of me and I'm not really knowledgeable in computers, so I'm interested to know if you had any advice or stories to share that would help my decision. I'm ready to spend what's needed for a decent laptop that will last a couple of years, so what are your experiences and recommendations regarding durability in terms of brands, CPUs, GPUs, etc.? Also, all the laptops I've seen so far come with Windows 8 preinstalled and I have mixed opinions regarding this new OS. My current laptop is running Windows 7, so upgrading would naturally require some adaptation. That's not a problem by itself: if the change's worth it, I'm fine with it. However, it seems that Windows 8 is plagued with a couple of issues regarding its UI such as the Start menu not being there anymore (there's Start8 at least...) and others listed in this article: www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/windows-8-what-you-ll-need-to-relearn-1085293/1So, by your experience, is upgrading to Windows 8 worth it or should I stick with Windows 7 for the next couple of years? Important details: I don't feel the need of having a touch screen and I don't have other devices such as tablets or phones. I thank you in advance for your responses.

The only difference from 7 that I've experienced in 8 over the past eight months is the lack of a start menu. Metro can be completely avoided in 8.1, you will basically never have to look at it. The article you've linked only goes over metro for the most part, the desktop mode on 8 is VERY similar to 7's, give or take a couple things being moved around.

The ability of ignore the Metro interface is a very good thing (at least) in the beginning. Honestly, what I really want is being able to do the same activities (professional or personal) as I previously did without too much trouble.
Thanks for the info Moo.
