For this thread, I decided to start a little review thread for former and current DOS gamers alike, where they can share your thoughts and memories of your favorite and hated Dos games.
To start, here's my review of Blood. by monolith productions.
in 1997, a game called Blood was released by monolith productions. made by Ken Silverman's BUILD engine, it made a successful name with it's 3 brethren, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, and Redneck Rampage. all of which were unique in their own ways. to understand how this one was unique in it's own way, let us see through these steps:
Concept - The Story puts you into the shoes of Caleb. (Stephen Weyte) once the commander of a cult called The Cabal, which worshiped the Dark god, Tchernobog. you see, in 1871, Caleb and his, "Friends, (I guess)" had somehow failed to obey their master's commands.
So being the loving master he is, Tchernobog kills them all by various means. then years later, Caleb returns from his grave, swearing vengeance against the Cabal.
Graphics - this is probably the main reason why this game is so different from the others. you can pretty much bet that the name of this game blends perfectly with the idea of it.
Using Dynamite, flare guns, Aerosol cans, and sawed-off shotguns to kill your enemies, (and non-enemies) in very bloody ways. the rest of the game looks pretty atmospheric, and it definitely resembles an old 1920s style, but the main character's animation, which you can only see by the map or in a mirror, is just running, and probing. no jump, walk, or crouching idle animations. However, the cutscenes, as clunky and messed up as they look, are pretty impressive for their time.
Sound - Stephen Weyte provides the voice of Caleb, And that's a good thing, because he just so happens to be a great voice actor.
Right up there with David Hayter, (Solid Snake) Todd Susman, (John Mullins) and many others. one thing that I like is how actual the deathscream sounds are and how fitting the music is.
Controls and Gameplay - when using dosbox, Blood needs a few tuneups before you actually start playing it. other than that, the game feels solid and responsive. and the alt. attack, which is THE REAL thing the separates the game from the others, makes the killing fun and easy. the weaponry has some pretty nice selection; you can use a voodoo doll, a skull and some bones tied to a staff that sucks out the life of your enemies, and remote/proximity dynamite addons. the only thing I just couldn't understand was the fact that the Guns Akimbo powerup was timed. you would think that you would be able to keep two guns at all times like in traditional shooters, but I guess not here.
Overall - Blood, is Fun, Funny, Juicy, and simply entertaining. definitely an elite title.
Score - 9*/10
legend: *: and a half **: and three quarters
