I use the MIDI to help me out with certain songs, especially my Pokémon ones. However, I've got a few that are 100% by ear. Most of them are a cross between a MIDI and ear.

I never use MIDIs, I like the challenge, even though my ear's probably terrible.
Sooner or later, though, If there's a song I REALLY want to do, I think I'll have to resort to using one.

Ear.
I'll have to chalk that up to when I started playing with my older brother's Casio Keyboard since I was about 7 years old. I loved replaying VGM starting back in the NES days all the way to the present day.

MIDI is a crutch. Fire up the video game, and use your ears! It's a much better skill to develop/have than to simply copying somebody's work (which may be wrong as well). There are tons of inaccurate MIDI files floating around.

Always used my ear and I can't read MIDI whatsoever lol only a couple of times I had to use MIDI though, just for a few notes in chords and such. But using ear imo is better. You can do any song you randomly find on youtube and it's more funner to P:

This post was over two years ago. I wonder how many of the people who have said 'MIDI' back then now say 'Ear' or vice versa. I believe many MPCers since then have developed a stronger ear or intuition for the notes in a song.
I go by ear. I'm too impatient to use a MIDI. I don't like switching back and forth between looking at a MIDI and then going to MPC and so on and so forth.

I use a combination of my ear and sheet music when composing mario paint. It's kind of a pain trying to compose an entire score out of a piano part, so I have to improvise a lot.

I always go by ear. MIDIs aren't always accurate, and I'm too lazy to look for them anyway.

Since it's been like two and a half years since I posted about this...
I stopped using MIDIs in late 2009. I've used my ears only (plus a little help from others on a note or two) on everything but Asphalt Cocktail, Aurora Awakes, and Overture. I was able to get ahold of original scores or accurate arrangements for them.
I get wrong notes all the time, too. It kinda sucks, but at least I have a greater willingness of screwing around with the song to make it sound cooler, fit limitations, and making it interesting to listen to. I get better at it every time, though, (mostly because I'm getting better with theory and chord recognition) so the bad notes are starting to disappear. I'd still recommend MIDIs, but only for learning how to use Mario Paint Composer. It's way more fun to go by ear.

mariopaintcomposer.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=discuss&action=display&thread=3278Ohmygawd guys, I liek totally already did this thread ages ago. On a more serious note, in the past I've done a mix, but mostly sheet music/MIDI. At the moment, I'm more into the idea of the challenge of doing something by ear. It can take much longer and be more frustrating but I guess it's more fulfilling than just copying things from a MIDI. Saying that, at the moment I don't imagine I could make a super accurate rendition of a song in MP just by using my ears in a reasonable length of time, so I think a bit of MIDI support to speed things up would hardly be a sin.

I knew it sounded familiar.
Anyway, not much change from two-three years ago. Still mostly by ear... never got into the MIDI thing.

Ear or memory, or sometimes both. But then again, most of what I do is OCs.
I just don't see the point in using sheet music/MIDIs, because IMO it's pretty much taking notes from one thing and bringing them to another thing, in simple terms. :/

Ear!!
I agree with TomBob fully on this one; MIDI is a crutch. Get that acetylcholine flowing by creating and strengthening new synaptic connections! (i.e. "practice makes perfect") This is how you actually get BETTER! Don't rely on compensation as it's probably the most detrimental and hindering thing you can do to your brain.
