This forum doesn't have polls? Darn.
Anyway, one for ear.

I'm fifty-fifty. If there's a song that I want to do that has a MIDI, I use it. If there's no MIDI, I go by ear, though I've never released anything where I didn't use a MIDI. -.-"

Some songs I do completely by ear (SMG Final Battle, Weldar, Chilly Willy and all the real songs i've done), but sometimes I will consult a MIDI for chords or notes I can't determine(old king coal)

MIDI ALWAYS
But I have been able to get one (1) song completely by ear. It was the ocarina part of Zelda's Lullaby. Actually, I sat down at the piano today and I could get the basic melody of Chariots of Fire. I'm sure it was in the wrong key (lol C major)

A little of both. I always listen to the actual piece to check to ensure that the pitches right, but there's nothing wrong with using a MIDI as long as it's good.

I'm pretty much use MIDI's for everything (Except for my first), but I'm not dependent on them. I'll add in a part, or fix a part that's wrong in the MIDI.

There's some notes I wouldn't be able to interpret by ear, so I have to completely rely on midi notation software to read notes. However, I have mp3s as a base, so if the midis have something that doesn't sound quite right, or there's a couple wrong notes, I have a reference to go back to. By ear also helps me determine volume control and whether or not to use the low A glitch at key places.

I only do songs that I know by heart. I use a MIDI for all of my compositions, but if something clashes with my memory of how the song goes, I'll do that part by ear. But yeah, MIDIs generally help me crank out songs quicker. Piecing together a song by ear is kind of a pain. :/

Most of the time I use MIDIs. I try to go by ear sometimes, but I generally find it too hard to do so with songs with a lot of instruments.

MIDI, because my ear is awful and I don't have the patience. I have done small bits of songs by ear, when parts of the MIDI have been incorrect.

I would say, 70% by Midi and 30% by ear...All my Vg Medley Song were done by ear(except the Donkey Kong Country Bonus Stage and KSS Intro).

Done by ear, except for my King Dodongo theme. Even with that one, however, I tried add my own "personal touch," i.e. the Faces and Yoshis.

Sometimes by ear, sometimes by MIDI. I'm using MIDIs more often than I used to, but that's not going to stop me trying stuff by ear once in a while.

If only I was more experienced with music, I would use my ear. Unfortunately, my ears are not very trained to I am limited to midis. Ear composing is by far way more fun, however. It lets you remix and add your own style.

My philosophy is the following: There's nothing wrong with using a MIDI. If the notes are right, a MIDI will take you a long way quicker. However, not all MIDIs are available, and of the ones that are, not all are perfect. That's when your ear comes in.
