I'm getting a lot of requests to turn one of my videos into an Mp3 so it can be converted into a ringtone. Does anyone have instructions on how to do such a thing? Thanks.

I googled Youtube to MP3 and got tons of results. Don't know which one to use though.

Well, you can use keepvid.com to download the whole video itself.
For the seperate MP3, I recommend listentoyoutube.com.
Use iTunes or something to convert to a ringtone.

I'm pretty sure Windows Movie Maker can publish videos into an MP3 format.

No. Windows Movie Maker cannot convert to MP3. It can only convert to WMA, which is supported by many MP3 players and some cell phones. To convert to MP3, you may try one of these options: - Media-Convert: Convert file types online. - Windows Media Audio Converter: It comes bundled on some Media Center computers to convert between MP3, WMA, and WAV. - SUPER ©: Convert between many popular file types, with both audio and video.

I know that several audio editors like Wavepad for instance can open videos and play out the Audio. Which you can then save it as an MP3. But that costs money, so we wanna try do this without spending any money.

I like to record stuff with the"Mp3mymp3" program, or, as cat333pokemon said, I use SUPER(C) as well. I guess this could be applied to making Mario Paint videos into mp3's

if you want to go illeagal, i'm sure you could look up some a crack for Blaze Media Pro or some other Audio converting/editing software to convert it from WMA or WAV to MP3, and then edit it so it sounds just right. (BTW Blaze Media Pro is awsome if you have a fast computer. Never tried the trial on a slow computer). but we don't endorse that sorta thing do we? You could also use VidtoMP3

uhh..I feel like I'm missing something here, but didn't John ask on how to convert one of his *own* videos? Which would mean he would have the original master video? So the youtube ripping posts would be a bit irrelevant..(unless he lost the master or something)
Personally, I would dislike the idea of having an audio release going through two different modes of compression (wmv, then mp3), so I would simply rerecord the piece into wav (no video capturing necessary, only need audio capturing software), and convert using LAME from there. Oh, and LAME is free too, and the best encoder out there..just a bit of a learning curve if you aren't used to typing DOS commands. (there are front ends for it though..EAC is one example, as is Virtualdub combined with the LAME ACM plugin)

If you have the original recorded Video, it's quite simple. 1. You need the application SUPER, as cat333pokemon already mentioned. (You can use other apps of course, but this howto will assume you use SUPER, savy?) 2. Start SUPER and add the video to the list. 3. Select "mp3 (Audio Only)" as output container. Video will be disabled automatically now. 4. Now what you have to do depends on the format the video has. (You can use the VLC media player to display information about the video format and codec, shortcut is Ctrl+I.) If the audio codec is already mp3, you can do a stream copy: Simply select "Stream Copy" in the Audio section and click on "Encode (Active Files)". If the audio stream has another codec, you have to transcode it. Look up the Bitrate and Frequency of the original stream in VLC and adjust the values in SUPER (it doesn't make sense to select higher values, the audio signal wouldn't get better, just the file will be larger). For channels, select 1, because the Mario Paint Composer doesn't output stereo sound anyway (well, I don't know about those alternative SoundFonts, never used one). Press on "Encode (Active Files)". 5. Now the mp3 file is where SUPER is configured to save it. (Find this folder using the menu that pops up on right click anywhere in the SUPER main window, you can also change it there.) Annotation on ringtones: It depends on the mobile phone you're using. The iPhone, for example, uses m4r files, so you can use SUPER to convert your video to a aac audio file and rename its extention to m4r. That should work. I normally convert the file I want to have as ringtone to a wave file and then import it using iTunes with its AAC codec, because I believe iTunes' codec is a little better than the one SUPER uses. You get a m4a file from iTunes, which you only have to rename to *.m4r.
