Why? Why do people ask for the text files? My guess is that so they can change the filename, change a note here and there, and release the video as their own. What are your guys' (and girls' suppositions?

Well, I have to admit it is fun to mess with a completed composition (like, go around and replace all the notes with cats and dogs, up the tempo to three times what it should be and play through a finished piece, in addition to other things). However, people probably request text files either to see the notation of a song they like or, as you already said, to thieve.

I probably wouldn't send txt files to anyone unless I trusted them. Other than that, I asked a few people for their txt files. Really, its for a good cause! No ill intentions here! ^^; (Well, they wanted to send them to me for evaluation)

The only people I share text files with are Cat333Pokemon and Axelrod. I occasionally preview some of my songs here but not all the time.
I get these messages at least once every 3 days. I don't message them back, because I already said that I don't give my .txt files out.

I give out my text files to some friends who think my compositions are interesting. I probably trust everyone on this site with text, because you guys aren't thieves.
I like to look at text files and mess around with them especially if it's for some complicated mario paint song. I like to mess around with the instrument and the tempos, it's really a lot of fun.

6 reasons why that might be. 1st - Preview with friends 2nd - To edit the song for you, but not steal it 3rd - For their own viewing pleasure 4th - Unfortunately, to steal it and call it their own 5th - To record for you, because you asked nicely 6th - (Related to 3rd) To play around with it for their own viewing pleasure I haven't had too much to worry about thieves that asked for the files...just the ones that copied it. Only times I shared were for those who asked nicely and for my earlier songs. I actually get lots of recording requests, and I do honor most of them. Heh, I've actually recorded two Saffron City contest entries! It really gives you a first-hand experience to be able to see another's work up close. You can see all the notes, edit the notes, and even (my favorite) change the SoundFont. The only time I re-uploaded someone else's work was in my video showing off my new SoundFont, in which I asked for permission and clearly showed the authors' names. It's still NOWHERE near as annoying as people asking how to extract the ZIP folder. Asking about sharps and flats is fine. That's a seven-word answer. Even high tempo is okay. But asking about extracting the program, running it, or "Script Error" just gets me annoyed. It's especially annoying when someone requests a song that has already been done. It's even more annoying when they request it to the SAME PERSON that already did the song! I've had some of these. I wish they would just browse my videos before requesting! *end rant*

I haven't gotten any requests for txt files, but if I ask for one, it's usually for listening pleasure; I just like to listen to good music. I agree with the reasons that milhouse posted.

I never asked for .txt files from anybody and I will never do that. IMO, it's pretty senseless. If somebody will ever ask me for .txt files, I of course won't give them out. Except when it's somebody I know personally.

I'm not one of the bigger names on MPC, but I still get those morons asking "CN I PLZ HAV DE TXT FILS?" Simple answer: HELL NO! If you're gonna do something with MPC, at least make an effort to do it yourself, not take someone else's work and edit it. It's highly unimpressive, although I will admit replacing everything with cats, dogs and pigs (NO BABY FACE!) can be funny if executed right.

I haven't had to cope with the problem 'cos no-one's asked me for them Perhaps they're scared that they'll get a nasty beating from The Snaaaarf... XD I would think they would want them to easily and freely access the songs to view for pleasure... if not to steal them...

Lets look at ihasmario, who gives out text files. How many Paint Rolls and TTCaDs have been copied? Simply put, people take text files to claim others' work as their own. This is why I will never give out a text file, not even here.

I HAVE THE BEST IDEA FOR THIS!
Simply copy-paste a few copies of ihasmario's PaintRoll (which you can easily get the text files for) and rename them to whatever your piece is, with the same number of files. Then, stick them in a zip with an arrangement file and send it off. Instant RickRoll.
I first did this today and received four messages in reply. First was a simple "Thank you". Second was a "Wrong song" message. Third was "Was that a joke?" Fourth was "Stupid Rick Roll!"
