So I've been trying to think of ways to get some more activity going in the forum and in the MPC community lol. One of my ideas was a competition of sorts, which we used to have a lot of back in the day. One competition from early 2010 I really enjoyed the concept of and would love to see again is a tournament where entrants are paired randomly in a bracket, and in each round each pairing MPC's the same song (there would be a different song per pairing). A team of judges would judge each pair of songs according to a simple rubric to make things fair, and the winner moves on to the next round, so on and so forth until there's an overall winner.
Sounds fun to you? That's what I wanted to gauge! Would anyone be interested in such a tournament? I know things aren't as active as they used to be, but I think there are a decent number of people out there who still MPC. If I get enough people expressing their interest in actually being a part of this, I'll organize it and make it happen :-)

Yeah this sounds awesome! What I really enjoyed was the "host" selecting an old school tune (who remembers the Sting Chameleon competition?), and having all participants recreate that tune. Of course, in those competitions, there were a couple things I thought that could have been improved, such as having YT viewers cast their votes, which does contain its own validity in its own way, but it was clear that some competitions were becoming a popularity contest to a degree. I think a panel of judges is a great idea in that respect. I really like doing that pair stuff too. Another thing that I always thought would be interesting (I don't know how plausible this would be or if this would even detract from individuals' artistic value) is having submissions anonymous to the jury panel. I always thought it would be way cooler knowing that the compositions are being judged without any prior knowledge to who made the compositions. These are just a couple of passing thoughts. Anyway, I think this is a great idea!!

I remember those single-tune competitions from a long time ago, even though they happened before I started MPCing lol. My one issue with a competition like that is that if you're a potential participant who doesn't like the song, well it's tough luck for you. That's why I like options better, hence that aspect of the idea I proposed--I haven't hashed out how songs will be chosen, but I think I'll have some sort of poll going (if enough people want to do the tournament) where we vote on a whole slew of songs and the top number get to be randomly assigned to pairs during the competition.
I like the anonymity aspect you described, which is something I always found fun about the Secret Santas we'd do every so often. Anonymity certainly makes things more fair as it helps reduce any pre-existing biases the judges may have, but it would be hard to do for pairings since there are only two people involved at a time. If we come up with a cool way to implement anonymity though, we'll try it out!
