UPDATE, 8/6/11
Sorry, far to busy to put effort into a video like this atm
Congratulations to both entrants, you really made the tournament great. I personally had a nightmare of a time deciding between you two.
UPDATE, 6/6/11
Doing this at midnight because I can. Voting time!
Pwnzin8r gave me the video 30 minutes before the deadline so he's safe, I'll get to recording it ASAP. In the meantime, let's see some comments!
Loggy - Rainshadow Ravine
I'd like to thank you for bringing out what I wanted to see in this tournament - 3, unique pieces that really showed variety and skill in a composer. Rainshadow Ravine continues the streak of win that started with 'Happiness' with it's superb transistion from minor to major that you created so subtlely that it took me a while to fully recognize it until I listened to the song several times. The bass is really catchy and works great with the harmony. Heck, even the melody. This is the best Piano OC I've heard in a while! The only thing I'd criticize is that the ending was very abrupt and slightly awkward, however the final chord cleared that up with a touch of humour. Well done, Loggy, and fare well with future OCs!
Pwnzin8r - Hoarfrost
I haven't said it much to anyone in this contest, but I really like the way you kept the atmosphere quiet in the beginning and didn't overpower it, giving the piece time to build up which was created to a magnificent extent, espicially with the boos (Despite them being fairly difficult to hear). The coins and heart crashes were a great effect giving the song a powerful beat, combined with the mushrooms and hihat boats which I love so much <3. Also, this is the 1st piece of yours that doesn't use the same chord sequence throughout the entire song. The variety makes it a tough entry and one I really love! I don't see the orchestra SF being used much these days. You and Loggy have made it really hard to vote... I'm stumped :/
UPDATE, 3/6/11
Ohhh boy. 2 days left till myself and the judges get to vote on these! I can't wait! Good luck to both of you!
UPDATE, 24/4/11
I'll assume anyone active in the contest has seen this video by now so I'll post it and the results here.
The next matchups are RC vs FlamingLog, and P8 vs Chris.
There is now no rule concerning when you upload your video as opposed to others. You have till the 7th of May, however.
I might as well do some comments while I'm here.
Loggy - Vs Retromaniac
Holy crap, this is a 1st. Haven't seen anyone devise an NES OC of this standard in a long time. Although some layers like the bass are difficult to hear at times and the percussion could do with being more advanced to give a more upbeat feel to the song, I love the harmonies and chordwork in the it. That and the pitch bends and other effects make me smile.
Pwnzin8r - Exploration Grove
This reminds me of M7M3 in a sense that it's full of sustains, animal effects and a catchy bass line. The coin and boo harmonies are pretty innovative too, and you're just getting better and better with the original SF. Only thing I would say is that the 4 chord repetition gets a tad boring after a while, but you got a fairly decent piece of music out of it like your 1st round song. Also, in saying that I think the fade out was a very creative and effective use of repetition. Keep it up, P8!
RC - Daydream another day
Interesting use of things no-one has done for a while, like multiple windows and multiple SFs. (Infact, multiple SFs has only been done once to my knowledge) This works well as a song and I'm sure I could be heard singing from downstairs. The chord structure is generic, but you've carried it out nicely along with the harmonies in the piranha plants and planes. Only thing I would say is it sounds a bit empty in places, but not to a drastic extent.
UPDATE, 14/4/11
Alright, that's more than enough time. =P I'm going to write my comments here and I'll discuss with the judges concerning their votes over the next few days. For other judge comments, see their posts below.
Jag - Credits of Victory
I'm going to be blunt - The beginning seemed very messy and the chords didn't really fit. However, the part from 0:32 DID get my attention. You've added a lot of variety into this song and tried things a lot of other contestants didn't.
Volcan - Theme of Daisuki
I love the build up of this song, and the interesting harmonies and pizzicato strings implemented into this song, even if overall the tune is somewhat repetitive. The trumpet is also a very nice touch, particularly due to the pitch slides. Let's do that again!
RC - The Shadow and the Adventurer
For a composition that uses relatively few instruments, it doesn't sound empty whatever. I really like the musicality of the moving chords, and I can't get other those faces at the start. Only thing I would suggest would be to vary the dynamics and climatic effect. Nice job!
Chris - A Distant Memory
Woah... Where to begin! This was a beautiful piece. Even with a tempo of 256, he managed to expertly create such skilled dynamics, made use of a very awkward time signature which even altered halfway through, and had an ostinato that worked a lot better than I originally assumed. I honestly can't think of any improvements at the moment - Very well done!
Pwnzin8r - Moment of Truth
For someone who doesn't use original SF at all, I'm really impressed, P8. I'd probably have to expand on what Poppy said in the comments by saying you've worked very well with dynamics and instrument choices/combinations in the composition, and despite the song being repetitive you got a lot out of it and I didn't find myself bored in any part of it. Congratulations!
Eskay - Rock Song
When I 1st recorded this, I actually had a feeling this was designed for a different soundfont. I tried it myself and it seems to work better that way, namely with Hard Rock. I like your interesting use of volume control here, particularly for the gameboys, but IMO this song was quite repetitive and was SCREAMING for some bass. With some form of bass this song could have honestly been 10 times better.
Mr G - Confidence
1st of all, gratz on being the only person to record for themselves, as I recorded the other 7 X D As for the OC, I like the use of the animal sounds in here, particularly baby faces if you want to call them animals... The song has an interesting chord structure, but it still works. Only thing I'd like to see is some bass, as with Eskay's, and perhaps more to the song? It was pretty bland overall, though still worth a listen.
Loggy - Happiness
Heh, this is happy alright. You've got a some good patterns in there, which don't repeat, and for a non dickspeed song I really like the structure of it all, it works well as a lyrical song (Despite the fact the lyrics aren't even finished) I also like the rock variety you added halfway through. The solo was pretty awesome, but IMO it was very abrupt and needed a bit of warming towards - The song wasn't ready for something so powerful just yet - And at the end of the solo the song felt very empty again. Good work, regardless!
UPDATE, 4/4/11
A week to go, and only one pair completed... LE GASP. D=
Regardless, I'll post my own feedback here, and then the judges and I will vote on these nearer to the deadline.
