The main problem I've had is that extreme tempo changes lead to lag in switching tempos. Going double-speed can screw up the song for a bit, which isn't great. The timing on how to do it comes with practice.

No there has never been tempo gaps. It doesn't make sense for someone as smart as Ford to make something that screws up the composing process now does it?

What ^ and ^^ said. But the lag thing really is annoying.

I generally try to avert it by doing it at parts with little/no percussion. This way, there's less of a frame of reference for the lag.

If you switch tempos, sometimes, the mario is a bit spastic; it can jump a few lines forwards or backwards. I ran into that in the Song of Storms MP/MPC/MPC2.0/AMS that I made. To avert it, you can change the tempo slowly through several lines, but that causes issues in timing, as well. You'll have to experiment.
