Hi! I've got a little bit of a problem with my gameboy colour. Basically, it doesnt seem to be saving properly. So, say, if i played a game of Tetris. When you get game over, you enter your name and it adds your score to the list. That works fine, but when i turn the gameboy off and back on again the score is gone. It does the same with every game ive tried... It is ment to save it, right? I'm not much of an expert on this sort of thing. I got it second hand, very recently and apart from this it works fine. Has it run out of memory, or something? I don't see how it can have, 'cause i thought that when you save stuff it saves it to the cartridge, not the gameboy?? I'm a bit confused... It's not much of a problem for game like Tetris, Bubble Ghoust etc, but for games like Donkey Kong and Kirbys dreamland, when you gradually play through the game over time, then this is a problem... I don't really know wether its the gameboy that's wrong or the games... all the games i have are second hand too (Thats the only way you can get 'em easily, seing as you cant buy them in game shops like Game) Reckon you can help at all?

It is a problem with the cartridges. You see, those games were manufactured many years ago and I'm pretty sure that the ones that save data have some sort of battery inside that has gotten old and ran out of juice. I know this because Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal had a battery inside that was used to power the internal clock. I've heard many stories of those games' internal clocks stopping due to dead batteries. So theoretically, if you have the correct tools to open up a Gameboy cartridge, you could potentially replace the battery and regain the ability to save! Though I'm not sure about what type of battery exactly would be in there and I'm not sure exactly how to dissect a Gameboy cartridge and put it back together but I'm pretty sure other might know the details. I'm not even sure if I'm right about most of the help I'm giving. But if I helped out even just a little, I know I've done my job. Good luck!

I've actually replaced the battery in a Pokemon Silver cartridge before and it works fine now. The battery is a "CR2025" battery, probably available at your local hardware store. The method is tricky, and could potentially damage the game if you're not careful with the screwdriver, so I take no responsibility for anyone that takes this advice. I used this guide to help: www.instructables.com/id/How-to-replace-the-battery-in-a-pokemon-goldsilve/

Thanks guys! I understand now! Rather than flash memory, (like memory sticks use and i guess DS games use) they have a small battery to hold the memory. So when that runs out it looses its memory and can no longer save! That makes sense! And the pokemon ones run out faster 'cause they have an internal clock? Thanks a tonne, guys! If I get Pokemon Red, I'll certainly need to do this. I may do it also with Donkey Kong, 'cause its a great game, but its annoying me that it won't save! lol Once again, thanks guys!
