*sigh*[epic rant]
Back in June, I bought a laptop for college. The college does give you a laptop, but the one I got was, according to my tech-savvy friend, twice as better than the schools. The school had a list of what I needed for my degree, and my computer was built for that. It had Vista Premium, a fingerprint scanner, Microsoft Office Professional, and 2 years of Norton Antivirus.
My computer was great; one of the best computers I've ever seen...until I found out it wasn't registered.
By registered, I mean that it had to be verified "safe" by the college's Tech Support. I would, therefore, be allowed to access the Internet at school. School started on the 13th of July. My scheduled time ro register my computer was the 25th of August.
That was problem number one. I WAS IN SCHOOL FOR OVER A MONTH BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO USE MY COMPUTER AT SCHOOL. Now, this was something I could live with. I mean, I only needed to access the Internet when I needed to take certain notes during class. This was only needed three times.
Finally the week arrived, and I recieved more bad news. On the sheet I built my computer around, they had failed to list that instead of Vista Premium, we needed Vista Buisness. That would mean I would need to buy Business from them (around $69) and WIPE MY COMPUTER.
There's three more problems. One, I was not warned about Vista Business, and therefore was ripped off BIG TIME. Second, Vista Business IS WORSE THAN Vista Premium. Third, I now had to backup ALL MY FILES onto an external hard drive which I didn't own.
August 25th comes, so I head to the Tech Support room to drop off my computer. After filling out the forms I handed them by computer. They said I would get it back within the next few days.
On August 26th, I received a call fro Tech Support, saying that my computer was finished. I drove to school and picked it up, ready to restore my files. Here's where I lost all hope.
When I got home, I linked my laptop with the external hard drive I got to restore my files. I go through the steps and click "Restore." After a few minutes, a message pops up:
ERROR: The files you are trying to restore use a version of Windows it cannot recognize.
...
...I couldn't restore my files?
This didn't seem as such a bad thing, as I had mostly stuff that could be downloaded again. Until it hit me...all the things on my computer that I had bought when I bought the computer no longer worked. My fingerprint scanner was disabled, Office was blocked, and even certain buttons on my computer didn't work anymore.
I exploded after realizing that. One, I NEED OFFICE for my degree. Two, I found out that it wasn't just Business that was cuasing my files to not be restored; the Tech Support had installed a file that I cannot find that prevents restoring. I do not know why. Three, they had deleted my Norton Antivirus, therefore costing me $200 for something I never got to use. Four, MY COMPUTER IS NOW SLOWER, which is strange seeing as how I had more stuff on my computer before Business was installed.
My mother called to see how my computer was. She was told about the Business upgrade the same time I found out, so we was already mad at the Tech Support. After I told her about my computer, she was even madder then me. Here's a few thing that were on the list I built my computer around:
Fingerprint scanner: BROKEN BY TECH SUPPORT
Microsoft Office Pro: BLOCKED BY TECH SUPPORT
Norton Antivirus: DELETED BY TECH SUPPORT
Windows XP Pro/Vista: DOES NOT SAY BUSINESS
Now, here's the topper. If I do not finish school, I now haveto turn my laptop in. They don't keep it; they just uninstall the programs they put on. Therefore, I BOUGHT BUSINESS AND I DON'T EVEN GET TO KEEP IT.
My computer was once twice as good as their computers. My friends now say it's worse. I basically need a new computer to finish my degree, so this $2000 laptop I bought two months ago, BUILT TO THEIR SPECIFICATIONS, no longer fits their standards.
Thank you, Tech Support. I'll see you get the bill...
