Try www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.htmlI had the same issue. Start your computer in safe mode (only essential drivers, so the comp shouldn't shut off), go to the internet, download the above program, install it, run it. Run a boot check (the program will scan your hard drive as it starts, and remove viruses in your drivers, the reason why your computer shuts off when it's on.) It's been a while since I used it that way, but it should be an initial option when it is installed.

As mentioned, Spybot Search & Destroy can help you find spyware, but definitely try Avast! first.
In the other topic, you mentioned having a "bad" fan. Have you tried to clean it by using canned air? My laptop had that problem when I realized it was getting extremely hot. The next time I turned it on, I noticed the fan was barely spinning. I pulled out the canned air and used it for a good 30 seconds. (Well, dust kept flying out, so I had to keep going!)

on my old, old laptop (like NT-era old), the fan doesn't even work and there's so much dust in there, it overheats not to long after I can log on.

I know this will sound melodramatic, but if you have Avast, make sure you run a full deep scan. I had several Trojans still on my HD, even after the boot check.
Also, Avast has a nice on-access scanner, which means that it quietly runs in the background (very low CPU drain). If you download a file that is explicitly a virus, a spam site tries to plant spyware on your computer, or if a zip file you DLed had a single virus file in it, it tells you. It's great -- I've DLed independent software in a Rar file, Avast tells me that one of the files has a virus AS I'M UNPACKING -- allowing me to break the operation and prevent infection.
My only warning: keep your volume turned down when browsing, because it flashes this nice little klaxon sound effect that, while short, is loud, followed "By a virus has been detected".
God, I love this program.

I remember that, when my dad scanned this one computer in the house a few years ago (not mine), 800+ viruses, mostly Trojans, came up. But they weren't doing very much... Needless to say, they were all deleted.

can alleged viruses in a RAR file hurt you? Because Norton found two trojans inside a RAR file with installation files for games. It might be a false positive though.

What sort of games are we talking about here? And I mean that seriously -- where did you download them from, what are they, etc. PM me all the details if you don't want it all out in the open (ur illegal downloading practices XD) -- antivirus programs rarely give false positives, and two is even more of a red flag.

it's a game pack that I downloaded that contains *almost* every Reflexive Arcade game trial installation file. It's not illegal, though it was a torrent. It's acually a lot of rar files and most of the games I won't even play, so I may just delete it. I haven't run the infected file or anything.
