This problem has been bugging me for some time, and I would like a few suggestions.
A problem with MPC is that it very hard to hold notes other than the car. Even with the extensions that the new soundfronts bring, they only can hold for about a measure or two. I want to know if there is some sort of way to hold the lead instruments (flowers, gamboys, etc.) for an extended period of time without being too choppy. I'm not asking for perfection, but I would like some help.

Check my Hyrule Castle piece for long gameboy extension.
I use flower extension in my Sol Sanctum piece... but flowers are one of the most difficult instruments to extend right.
In general, the piece has to be somewhere between "reasonably fast" to "dickspeed" for such attempts to work. It's about lowering each successive instrument's volume, so that it ends up smooth enough.

It's about lowering each successive instrument's volume, so that it ends up smooth enough. I'd say that this sums it up. By diminishing volume as you go, you can lighten the attacks (making it seem more like an extended note)

With the original Soundfont (pfft- who uses that?), you could usually trick your audience into believing a sustain of the Flower or Game Boy by using the Car. See any of my earlier vids for examples.
It's really either a matter of making perfect echoes (see previous posts) or tricking listeners into believing what you want them to.

I still use the original soundfont... >_>
But yes, the cars are very helpful in sustaining flowers. By combining the two, it gives the illusion of "tonguing" a sustained trumpet note, with a bold attack that blends into a sustain well. As for Gameboys, at tempos over about 1200, you can sustain them by simply putting them down on every beat.
Stars and planes are pretty easy to sustain using the volume trick, but hearts aren't, for some reason (IMO). Try using Piranha Plants or Shy Guys to sustain bass notes. As for the other notes, I wouldn't even bother trying.

I have successfully sustained both GBs and flowers in both Composer and Sequencer at tempos under 1,000. For an example of the flowers, see here. For an example of the GBs, see here.

I definitely agree with the car+flower combo. It certainly can and does work pretty well.

Thanks for the help guys! All the things you said work. I must admit I never thought of using the car+flower combo =D If anyone else wants to make a suggestion, feel free to.

Car + Flower makes a flower-like sound except with a car sustainability... Though when there are multiple sustain groups, the flower should never be repeated because it makes the song sound segmented, like ---- ----- ---- instead of --------------. (sorry about the really bad text representation)
