All by ear for me I do it for the challenge I still don't see how you do it!! I voted for mostly by MIDI/ Sheets. For my first proper composition, Every day i love you less and less, i charted the vocals and a very basic percussion line by ear, but used some online tabs for the chords. Since then, I've been doing it mainly using Sheet music or MIDIs, Occaisionly doing little bits by ear. The problems i have with doing pieces entirely by ear in MPC don't include pitch picking. I'm Ok at that (I got full marks for aural in my grade 4!! lol ). The problems i have are working out timing. I find this very hard at a high tempo (over a few thousand). Working out which notes an instrument is playing if its playing more than one at a time. And working out notes that are hard to hear over another part playing (though, thinking about it, i reckon slowing the song down in audacity could help alot with that). Having said that, though, i do have at least two projects going which i'm doing by ear. One of which is in SNES Mario Paint. So i'm having to transcribe what i hear into a different key.

I started with MIDI, but since then I've slowly learned to do stuff better by ear. I started off horrible *coughHotAirSkywaycoughhack*, but my last try was even better *cough[insertcreativethemehere]coughhack* Diamond on a Landmine and Faint were mostly by ear, while the guitars were from some guitar tabs. I'm getting better, and soon I might not need sheets at all. Now they're a safety net. But seeing there isn't a "half 'n half" choice, I'll choose "Other".

All by ear for me I do it for the challenge I could never make an MPC song by ear because of the note limitations, so I prefer transposing the notes from the MIDIs I make.

All by ear for me I do it for the challenge I could never make an MPC song by ear because of the note limitations, so I prefer transposing the notes from the MIDIs I make. I don't really see how note limitations (5 notes per) can prevent someone from doing it by ear, since one would run into that problem anyways if they used sheets/MIDI. On a different point though, I'm so bad at ear recognition and all that stuff, that most of the time I won't be able to tell what key it's in. And how some people can just feel the beat and give crazy time signatures (like 17/16 and stuff like that) since to me it feels like I only feel in the standard 4/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 6/8 times...

I probably could do by ear, but my pitch recognition is terrible. XD I use MIDI's for the time being, but I think I'll try ear some more.

I do it all by ear. But usually I do easier songs just because it's more fun for me. XD

I generally do songs by ear, but I also do them from memory. Coupled with the 'ear' method, the memory method works extremely well for me. I used sheet music on the Get Smart theme, and most of you know how that turned out.

I switch between the two based on necessity. Melodic lines based on one or two notes at a time and rhythms are always done by ear quickly before I even have time to check the notation sheet music. However I have the worst time getting chords (usually 3 notes or more) and percussion down on the MPC screen without referencing the sheet music. Although I suppose I HAVE accomplished some of that stuff by ear, it just takes me forever using trial and error. It probably has to do with the amount of music experience in my background as is probably true for the rest of you.

Lately, I've become a lot less dependant on MIDI. I didn't use a MIDI reference on any of my 3 latest videos. I only use MIDI when I can't be bothered to take the time to figure out the song by ear. I also randomly did this by ear for the hell of it: tinypic.com/m/afeums/2

I do pretty much everything by ear. If I used sheet music, I think I would feel too "shackled".

I do everything by ear. I have absolutely no idea how to use sheet music or have any clue what a midi is xD

I'm at "Mostly Using MIDI/Sheet Music" right now, but I'm trying to get myself to a point where it's "Mostly By Ear". I know I could probably never 100% ear, at least for a long time, and I'm never going back to 100% MIDI like I did in the very beginning. I've gotten a lot better at using my ears since then. I don't think I'm quite at the point where I can say "Mostly by Ear" but I have been finding that I've been starting a lot more songs with just my ears than I used to.

Like others have said, my pitch recognition isn't the best, but that isn't the problem when I have a piano right next to me to press random notes to see if there's a match xP. My main problem though is the chords, I just can't tell when it is a chord or just a single note and it just frustrates me. That's why I go searching for MIDIs and then use it the best as I can.

Hmm, I am good at chords then I suppose. If I hear a chord, I can whistle or hum the 3 or 4 notes ascending (I hear up, I guess). I can't name the chord, though.
So Far I've done everything from sheet music, but currently I'm doing a piece entirely by ear. Its not as hard as I thought it would be.

a lot of MPC scores I hear are obvious copy pasta parties of MIDI files. zzz. A monkey can do that. Heck, slap a Mario Paint soundfont as your MIDI file playback sound source and there ya go. Hours of the tedious note entry saved! I would rather enjoy listening to an actual arrangement than a transcription. To each their own, I suppose.
