The X-hunters are mavericks too if you think about it.
They dismantled Zero and are holding him up for ransom if X can defeat them, and all three are equally tough in their own right. They also relocate themselves in stages that don't follow the natural order of boss mavericks, so X has to be both clever in his fighting and try to avoid getting his ass handed to him in the boss fight should he make it past the X-hunter in combat.
Serges is a b*tch without the Sonic Slicer, Agile keeps you on your toes, and Violen can put the hurt on you with a giant mace that takes up nearly the whole screen when he throws it at you.
X-hunters FTW.

X-hunters FTW. Sorry for double post. Normally, here's the order I take them down in: Wheel Gator Morph Moth (body upgrade) Overdrive Ostrich (beat Violen, dash upgrade) Wire Sponge Bubble Crab Flame Stag (beat Serges) Wheel Gator redux (buster upgrade, forces Agile to move) Magna Centipede (beat Agile) Crystal Snail (helmet upgrade)

I've X-bustered five of the X2 Mavericks. Wheel Gator, Morph Moth, Overdrive Ostrich, Wire Sponge, and Bubble Crab all fell to the X-buster from me. Still haven't X-bustered Flame Stag, Magna Centipede, or Crystal Snail yet...
