Hi, I'm new to the Mario Paint Hangout and am starting to do my own compositions.
For a Medley I am creating, I want to ask how would I do notes higher than MCP allows us to? (2nd line at top and above) I'm stuck because it's at the beginning of the song as well.
Do I need to lower the octave or mess with volume?
I want the notes to sound higher than this.

Also, I wouldn't mind if you can point me out some tips.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
You cannot have a note higher than a high C# or lower than a low Bb. You may have to improvise here maybe by placing an octave lower. The star works well with mario in this case since it is an octave higher and sounds similar.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I didn't know star was an octave higher, that helps a lot.

Is there a way to improvise with instruments like Car or Shyguy?
I'm also wondering what instruments can improvise for bass notes that don't sound like the Heart. If it's possible.

Hello Roob and welcome to the Hangout. If I am not mistaken, it is possible to raise or lower an instrument by multiple octaves, but you will have to modify the soundfont (soundset3.sf2) that comes with MPC in order to do it. I never did it myself, so the most I can do is link the video below, but some composers have done it and will be of greater help: Mario Paint Tutorial - Raising and lowering pitches - soundfontsI don't have much experience in Mario Paint and hence my "improvisation skills" are limited. All I can add is that I used low Boos as some sort of bass in the past... Roob, if you want, could you tell us which songs you're trying to arrange in MPC? Knowing that might allow us to help you better.

You can definitely do this with the soundfonts, or you can cleverly use the different MPC instruments to achieve your desired effects.
The star note is basically the only note that can do the higher octaves improvisation, unless you are really really good with the cat (I think Lologuru used it to emulate a high D when he ran out of stars).
Though.. that note that you are asking for happens to be the highest note on the Super Mario Paint staff.
