And I finally got this image-edit done. It's 1024X768.
And a massive conversation we had on the almost dead Mario Paint Compositions Group on YouTube. This also marks the birth of the soundfont modification craze! [/historical significance of conversation]

If extra notes (sounds) were added to Mario Paint...
RehdBlob (5 months ago)
I was wondering, if one were to add new sounds to Mario Paint, what would the picture be and what would it sound like? I'm thinking: (anyone, suggest some sounds for these pictures and also give more suggestions)
1. Luigi Head
2. Yoshi Egg
3. Feather
4. Spade (?)
5. Gameboy Advance (?)
6. Train (probably should sound like the car but different)
I'm thinking of maybe doing a kind of a Mario Paint Composer improvement project over the summer. It's going to have a different name, of course.
LoloGuru (5 months ago)
Let's see...
Luigi head - I'd give to an instrument similar, yet different to Mario. Bells?
Yoshi Egg - Tambourine, or some other light percussion?
Feather - Pick your favorite high woodwind.
Spade - A tenser string, say a violin pluck? Alternatively, grab some lower instruments you like and add them as a Spade, Club, and Diamond. =P
GBA - Some instrument with similar tonal quality to the Gameboy or car (stays same intensity till it's done.)
Train - Bassoon.
LoloGuru (5 months ago)
As for more symbols, a Koopa shell or a SMW Goomba, spiky, Bob-omb, etc, all fit, and a couple have stamps in the original Mario Paint. =P
RehdBlob (5 months ago)
Oh yeah, I just remembered THIS one:
8. a 1-UP mushroom. Maybe it should be like the mushroom as percussion but different?
theEvilGrimace (5 months ago)
MPC needs a crash cymbal note, mostly. Perhaps bullet/magnum bill or a bomb-omb would fit this.
Secondly, as a huge fan of BK, MPC needs some basoon. I DEMAND THAT POKEY RESEMBLE BASOON.
Snare rim-shot type percussion for the mentioned 1-up 'shroom, perhaps.
It could also use a low brass (fire sumo? Ludwig von Koopa?!?!) type instrument.
Lower octave bells/marimba type instrument, would fit luigi, mentioned above.
Flute/Pic - similar to stars, less attack. Resembled by the Feather/Sparky.
RehdBlob (5 months ago)
I'll make:
Train = Low Bassoon, similar to car
Luigi = Low Piano (or just piano) Or Low Xylophone
Spade = Low Brass
Club (poker) = Violin Pluck
Diamond (poker) = (undecided)
Bomb-Omb = Cymbals
1-Up = Snare Drums, other percussion
Feather = High Flute
Yoshi Egg = Tambourine
GBA = (undecided)
Well, that's the preliminary list. It'll obviously change, so keep coming with suggestions!
I will likely post a video with all the current sounds sometime. It'll likely be several image edits of MPC, though.
RehdBlob (5 months ago)
And I'm also looking for a picture that'll fit a strings category.
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
Maybe I'll use the Bullet Bill instead of the Bomb-Omb for cymbals instead.
lob31 (4 months ago)
Maybe you could make the GBA a GB that holds it's note (so it's literally a GameBoy *Advance*). Maybe a higher or lower octave GameBoy? Or something like a flute?
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
Well, I could add in the option to extend notes...
JohnFreeman1337 (5 months ago)
If you're looking for classic Mario sprites, here's some ideas:
Springs
SMB3 Powerups
POW blocks
Lakitu Clouds
Coins
ShadowXSnake (4 months ago)
Give me at least two more instruments to a line, and I'll love you forever.
Or Wario Heads for Tuba notes. Also Waluigi heads for Banjo notes maybe, that fits the strings category.
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
I mean strings as in violin or orchestra... (but those are good ideas) And as a reply to that two more instruments thing, I'm going to try to make it unlimited and have layers for each voice. (like a car layer, a plane layer, etc, or something. That, of course, should be disable-able.)
JohnFreeman1337 (4 months ago)
I'm really getting excited about this project now. I can't wait!
theEvilGrimace (4 months ago)
Indeed.
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
Programming takes a long time, though.
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
First, I have to thank EvilGrimace for giving me the heads up about this group. This should be fun
Since you guys were talking about it, I've been working on an improved soundfont for Mario Paint. I'll probably be working on two versions..one for use in MPC, and the other in a sound mixer or other program.
My goals are as follows:
Better quality sound
Volume fixes (especially for the plane sound)
Full note extensions (shorter notes can be created using the Low A glitch)
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
For other studio programs..
Set beginning and end loops so the notes play as long as they're supposed to.
Pitch and volume oscillation
full note extension, from C0-E#8 (there can be customized extensions added for MPC, just replacing other notes, ex. Baby Face for higher Gameboy pitch)
I think that's about it.
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
Oh, wow!
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
I was thinking about maybe making two staffs on the improved version and an "8va" or something for higher notes, but that soundreplace idea you(SatoshiLyish) have seems like a more immediate solution. I think you're going to finish with your soundfont improvement before I finish even the image editing of my version. We should also find ways to extend notes as well, like making the swan longer to make a strings sound...
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
have you seen ihasmario's Cowbell mod? It was the high bells in particular..it makes an echoing sound. So, from that I knew its possible to extend notes in sf2.
I've been using a program called Awave Studio to make my own soundfont. I looked at how the old one was made and built a new one using higher quality samples from ZSNES. Unfortunately MPC really is capped with a 28 note range. However, you can edit the root notes of the samples to get higher or lower sounding notes.
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
Interesting mod there. Maybe I should just mess around with that soundset first, but I'll keep attempting to write a new program. I've only got part of the main title screen editing done.
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
Content before graphics
okay, I'm about halfway done editing the notes to extend the notes like the car sound. So I'm almost ready for my first version release!
One other thing though..there's an autotune feature with this program..I've been debating whether or not to use it for some of the notes that don't fit right. (the pig noise) Any suggestions on what I should do here?
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago) S
oh, there was one other thing I forgot to mention. There is a way to get around the 5 note limit in MPC!
Unfortunately you can only connect notes with other notes, so if there's common chords that you play often (ex, treble+bass) you can simply connect the two sounds to play for one note. Add into the fact that you can add your own volume fade effects and this makes editing in MPC SO MUCH EASIER. (seriously, I hate messing with the volume controls in this program)
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
I'm not sure what you should do with the pig noise. Maybe you could try it and then revert back to the original if it doesn't work.
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
I just realized that you could make one entire voice equal just chords (like D = D major, etc) in a voice that you like and then use the other four notes for the melody!
LoloGuru (4 months ago)
I just wanted to say that I'm looking forward to beta testing all your improvements. =P
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
Ask RehdBlob for the link (or send me a PM). I'll have my sample video up soon for the first version.
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
Video and download link is now up. :3
theEvilGrimace (4 months ago)
Just downloaded it, and started a new composition w/ it (MMX Intro Stage). I have mixed feelings so far, but its a little early to give a full review.
Love the new boats. FINALLY. FINALLY a crash cymbal - even better, the G#/Ab looks to be the pitch, and its not broken anymore!
Geese are a bit much (volume-wise)I've lowered each one in volume so far.
Also, note that the glitch where low Bb and high C# still carry over the next note remains to be fixed. Running out of characters, more later.
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
yeah, with Bb and C# I think that has more to do with a bug in MPC and not the soundfont. I'm not a miracle worker here! Still learning.. ^^;
I fixed the Geese volume in 1.0e. I'll provide a link for 1.05 on the page shortly.
I've been debating whether or not to toss the block sound in favor of full extension of the cymbal with the boats. I can also tweak it so part of the notes create on octave lower.
..and would you say its a nice boat? :3
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
It's not just a nice boat, it's a REALLY good boat that actually is audible now.
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
I'm going to add in blocks that let you pick which voice should be attributed to them (you can change the voices of those blocks). There's a ?,!, yellow, blue, brown, and a stone block.
theEvilGrimace (4 months ago)
Just uploaded a side-by-side comparison of an unfinished original composition using first the original soundset and then MPC 1.05. Points out pros and cons, tell me what you think!
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
I made a reply to your video but I think Youtube ate it...unless you approve comments before they're displayed, I'm confused.
also, its MP+ for my soundset, not MPC. ^^; Sure, I made it to work with MPC, but if you have a soundfont loader (FL Studio?) it'll sure work with that too.
NorseFTX (4 months ago)
Ah! I've got to check this out!
This is amazing...
RehdBlob (4 months ago)
The MP+ is probably going to be around for a while before I'm able to finish that new version of Mario Paint. (plus, I don't really have a sound editing program (maybe I do, but I don't know)) Kudos to SatoshiLyish about the quick modification of the soundset of Mario Paint Composer.
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
aww..I was going to ask how progress has been in making a new program. Well, as long as you don't give up on it
I use a program called Cool Edit 96..like the name suggests, its 12 years old, lol. I basically grew up with this program, and was the first one to have all the features I ever needed. (that's why I still use it today). I believe it was bought out by Adobe, but this technically free version can still be found floating around on the internet if you look hard enough ^_^
adolfobaez (4 months ago)
if you have a soundblaster soundcard you can download for free vienna soundfont studio, thats the one I use when editing soundfonts, I think I´ll soon upload some of the mario paint soundfonts I´ve modified
SatoshiLyish (4 months ago)
sounds cool to me
