Felt I should grace these forums once again with an interesting offer for a challenge.
There are certain themes in videogame land that don't have midis composed for them. Some are even from classic games, while most others are from recent games.
The challenge as such is to recreate by ear these themes to the best of your ability.
I've thought of a points system based on the following criteria:
- Completion of the song (how much could you accomplish within the limit, say a month's time) - Accuracy of the song (how well the notes match that of the theme) - Use of dynamics/volume control - Use of soundfonts (bonus points for Original soundfont) - Popularity (special vote from viewers on who did the best job)
The points will then be tallied up and the one with the most points wins.
So what say you? Are you interested in taking the ear challenge?

I already do everything by ear anyway, so I'm in.

I do quite a lot of my later stuff by ear when I'm in the mood. I guess I'll enter. I even have a song in mind that I want to do.

I know of several MIDI's that don't exactly do their songs justice... I think I'll do this one during the winter break though

Sure, why not. I've been using my ear a lot more lately. I won't be able to do anything until Mid-December though.

I guess I should have mentioned that there was a list of songs to choose from, but if it's easier for you guys to compose your own theme (as long as it's by ear), then it'd be like the piano/original contest in that regard.
I should probably make a video detailing everything and post it as soon as possible.

Posting an update to see how everyone's coming along with their entries (assuming there's some progress? ). Remember, the deadline's January 15th, so don't delay too much, the more you get done, the more points you can score .

Well, depending on how much I work, I might get some songs done around New Years' Eve / Day

Since I can't really read music nor do I care to use a midi file (I consider that cheating but that's just me) I'm so in on this.

The deadline's this Saturday and I still haven't seen one entry. I don't know what's been going on, because I gave a modest amount of time to compose something, whether it was something of your own choosing, or something from the list of choices I provided in the video. Even if it's not completed, I still recommend you post it anyway, at least you'll get some points from it. I'm not looking for completed songs, I'm looking for those who can pull off compositions they've done by ear without relying on sheet music/midis. I'd be disappointed if this contest went to bust, but I may extend the deadline to the end of the month just in case, no later though. Let's make this happen, k?

An extension of the deadline to the end of the month should guarantee an entry from me, as I'm ~55% through MMX5 Zero Stage 1 right now

Alright, Jan 31 is the new deadline, but nothing further than that though. I'll close the contest if I don't see anything by then, so try to get as much done as possible, ok?

@rusty & Flaminglog:
I saw you posted video responses, but they're not showing up, nor are they showing "this is in response to" on your video itself. Is Youtube not recognizing the video responses or something?

I don't know. That's weird.

I never got a video response before, so when you get one, do you have to approve it first or does it automatically get attached to the video you responded to?

When I tried adding it, it said you had to approve. It depends on the settings you have for your account.
