I tried an experiment after failing miserably with Viena for an hour tonight, and it worked out nicely.
IF you're using AMS, AND you have at least one instrument not used in your song, you can try this out.
Using the 'Custom...' option under Soundfonts, just make your unused instrument a duplicate copy of the instrument you want to be louder. Place both copies of the instrument on the same spot on the staff and viola, a louder note. This effect does stack further if repeated, but I found the 6 note limit to stop me from placing more than 2-3 extra of these at a time in the song. So it is more often helpful in songs using dickspeed to get around the note limit.
Example: You're using the Ocarina of Paint soundfont and you want the Ship/Skull Kid Flute to be louder, even though you've raised the green volume bar to the max. You aren't going to use the Swan/Cuccoo in your song, so you use 'Custom...' to make the swan icon play the Ship/Skull Kid Flute. Now placing a Ship and a Swan in the exact same spot on the staff plays that note louder than before.
